10. Tom Herman, Florida Atlantic
Despite a 4-8 record at Florida Atlantic, Tom Herman has been on numerous hot boards for Power Four coaching vacancies. This year was no different, but Herman stays in Boca as people wait for him to turn the Owls program around before giving him another shot at the big time.
National Championship Odds: +100000
1. Dan Lanning, Oregon
Dan Lanning had Oregon in the running for the last Pac-12 title and, had they not missed a field goal at Washington in October, a spot in the playoff. His name was immediately mentioned when Nick Saban retired from Alabama. Lanning announced he was staying with the Ducks in an epic video on social media.
National Championship Odds: +1000
2. Lance Leipold, Kansas
Everyone awaited Kansas coach Lance Leipold to jump to a bigger program. That was also the thought when Washington opened up after Kalen DeBoer took the Alabama job. However, Leipold is staying with the Jayhawks, where he is 17-21 and coming off a nine-win season and back-to-back bowl appearances.
National Championship Odds: +20000
3. Lane Kiffin, Ole Miss
Lane Kiffin has a history of jumping to new and bigger things, but with the 12-team playoff and Ole Miss gearing up for a run with portal additions, he is staying put in Oxford. Would people have been shocked if he jumped to Alabama? Not at all.
National Championship Odds: +1500
4. Mark Stoops, Kentucky
Mark Stoops was nearly headed to Texas A&M before it was vetoed. The Kentucky coach has turned the Wildcats into a perennial bowl team but may have reached his ceiling. However, he is staying in Lexington…for now.
National Championship Odds: +20000
5. Jeff Traylor, UTSA
Jeff Traylor seems like the next big thing from the Group of Five and has been on several hot boards the last couple of offseasons. He’s 39-14 at UTSA and seems destined for a job in the Big XII. However, for one more season, Traylor will be guiding the Roadrunners.
National Championship Odds: +100000
6. James Franklin, Penn State
James Franklin always finds his name on the hot list for big programs. It was no different when the Alabama job opened. Franklin may not have been a “real” candidate, but Penn State did not negotiate a new contract with him this time. Franklin is staying in Happy Valley.
National Championship Odds: +2500
7. Jason Candle, Toledo
Jason Candle’s name is thrown around for a Power Four job every year. This year, it was Michigan State and Indiana. However, Candle has not landed that next step job yet and remains one of the best Group of Five coaches. There is still a chance he will land at Boston College, which just opened up.
National Championship Odds: +100000
8. Troy Calhoun, Air Force
Troy Calhoun has spent his entire head coaching career at Air Force, where he has won at least nine games eight times since 2007. He has 130 wins. His name has been floated for bigger jobs, but it never comes to fruition.
National Championship Odds: +100000
9. Chuck Martin, Miami (OH)
Chuck Martin led the Red Hawks to a MAC title this season and won 11 games. He was linked to several open Power 4 jobs but didn’t land one. He’s a good coach but has a losing record at Miami (OH), where he has been since 2014.
National Championship Odds: +100000
