2025 Open Championship Betting Trends: Scheffler, Rory and Rahm in Play

As the golf world turns its focus to Royal Portrush for The 2025 Open Championship, the betting board at BetMGM gives us a clear picture of who’s drawing early attention—and money. With odds tightening and liabilities building, we break down the current betting trends, top threats, and line movement for this year’s final major.

Stay ahead of the game and elevate your sports betting experience with SportsGrid.

Scottie Scheffler: The Heavy Favorite & Public Backing King

Scottie Scheffler opens the week as the odds-on favorite (+550) and for good reason. The world No. 1 enters with three wins this season (Byron Nelson, PGA Championship, Memorial) and a Tour-best +2.640 Strokes Gained total. Scheffler also ranks first in SG: Approach to Green (+1.298), second in proximity and scrambling, and sits top 15 in both driving and greens in regulation. He’s made the cut in all four of his Open appearances, highlighted by a T-7 last year.

Unsurprisingly, he leads in both ticket percentage (11.2%) and handle share (14.6%), signaling strong sharp, and public support.

Rory McIlroy: Home Soil Hype & Biggest Liability

Rory McIlroy (+750) is back at Royal Portrush, just 60 miles from where he grew up—and he’s the biggest liability on the board. After a rough patch mid-season, Rory has rebounded with a T-2 at the Scottish Open and enters the week ranking second in driving distance (322.2 yards) and fifth in SG: Off-the-Tee (+0.632). He also ranks fourth in SG: Putting (+0.754) and sixth in putting average (1.715)—a deadly combo when firing on all cylinders.

He’s pulled in 8.8% of tickets and 12.9% of the handle, making him a high-exposure name for sportsbooks.

Jon Rahm: Steady Support & Strong Links Pedigree

At +1200, Jon Rahm is another major liability for books heading into the week. The LIV standout has shown up at every major this year, making all three cuts with a T-7 at The US Open being his top finish. He also sits second in LIV’s season standings, fresh off a runner-up finish in Andalucia.

Rahm’s 5.9% ticket share and 8.0% handle percentage show a healthy mix of public and sharp backing. Add in his two Irish Open wins and top-3 finish at Royal St. George’s last year, and it’s clear Rahm is built for links golf.

Bryson DeChambeau: Drifting Odds, High Risk

Once sitting at +1800, Bryson DeChambeau’s odds have drifted out to +2200, but he remains one of BetMGM’s biggest liabilities. Known for overpowering golf courses, DeChambeau’s game may not naturally suit links layouts—but he’s been trending well in majors and could overpower Royal Portrush if conditions allow.

Bryson owns 5.3% of tickets and 6.9% of the handle, making him a sneaky exposure concern.
