Davis Riley shot an even-par 70 in the final group on Sunday alongside Scottie Scheffler, clinching the Charles Schwab Challenge by five strokes over the world’s No. 1 player Scottie Scheffler and Keegan Bradley for his first individual PGA TOUR victory.
Riley finished at 14-under 266, sealing the win with a 6-foot par putt on the final hole at Colonial Country Club. Bradley closed with a 67, while Scheffler shot a 71 on a challenging day, hitting only seven of 14 fairways and not making a birdie until the 13th hole.
Starting the final round with a four-stroke lead, Riley stumbled with a bogey on the second hole after driving into the right rough and hitting into the bunker. However, that was as close as Scheffler or any competitor would get, with wind gusts over 20 mph complicating play. This victory marks Riley’s second TOUR win, following his team win with Nick Hardy at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans last year. The Mississippi native’s triumph at the historic, recently restored Colonial earned him $1.638 million, the traditional winner’s plaid jacket, and a fully restored 1975 Stingray car.
Bradley, who has two wins this year, reached 10-under with a birdie at the 17th but missed a par save at the 18th after both his tee shot and approach landed in the right rough. Riley sank a 27-foot birdie at the 229-yard par-3 4th hole, part of the challenging “Horrible Horseshoe," while Scheffler bogeyed there and again at the 5th after his shot into the right rough along the Trinity River.
Riley extended his lead with a 9-foot birdie putt on the ninth hole, putting him six strokes ahead of Scheffler.
Collin Morikawa, the only player to finish all four rounds under par, placed fourth at 8-under after a final-round 68. Scheffler, playing near his Dallas home, achieved his 11th top-10 finish in 12 tournaments this year. Following a tie for eighth at Valhalla, this marks his third consecutive top-three finish at Colonial. Despite an opening round 72, including his first triple-bogey of the season, Scheffler has remained a strong contender, highlighted by his recent back-to-back wins at the Masters and the RBC Heritage.
