Tiger Woods will not be participating in the 2024 Memorial Tournament. This prestigious event, now with Signature Event status, has stringent qualifying criteria that Woods does not meet. The field for the Signature Event includes the Top 50 from the previous season’s FedEx Cup rankings and winners of PGA Tour tournaments from the current season. Additionally, players in the Top 30 of the world rankings, if not already exempt, secure a spot. The event also accommodates the Next 10, referring to the Top 10 players in the current season’s FedEx Cup rankings not otherwise exempt, and the Swing 5, which includes the five players who have accrued the most FedEx Cup points between Signature Events.
Unfortunately, Woods did not meet any of these criteria. While four sponsor exemptions are granted for the Memorial Tournament, this would not have suited Woods either, given his circumstances. With the US Open scheduled just a week after the Memorial, and Woods having already confirmed his participation via a special invitation, it’s clear that playing two consecutive tournaments would be a challenge given his current physical condition.
Woods has a storied history at the Memorial Tournament, having competed in 18 editions and securing a record five victories, including a streak of three consecutive wins from 1999 to 2001 and additional triumphs in 2009 and 2012. His performance at Muirfield Village Golf Club is remarkable, with four other Top 10 finishes and having never missed a cut at this venue.
Woods has posted 29 rounds in the 60s out of the 71 he has played at Muirfield, with his lowest being a stunning 63 during the second round in 2000, and his highest an 85 in the third round of the 2015 edition. His best 72-hole score was an impressive 19 under par, leading to his 2000 victory, while his worst was 14 over par, resulting in a 71st place finish in 2015.
The Memorial Tournament, a staple since 1976, is hosted at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Muirfield Village Golf Club. Nicklaus himself, a two-time winner of the event in 1977 and 1984, remains a significant figure. Tom Lehman holds the aggregate and to-par record with a 20 under 268 from his 1994 victory, and Woods holds the largest margin of victory at seven strokes in 2001.
