Scottie Scheffler faced more stress than anticipated on Sunday at the Memorial Tournament, yet he delivered the victory that has become almost expected from him.
Playing on the challenging Muirfield Village course, where only six players managed to break par, Scheffler posted his highest final round in nearly two years, finishing with a 2-over 74. It was just enough to edge out Collin Morikawa and secure his fifth win of the year.
Scheffler, starting the final round with a four-shot lead, never relinquished his position at the top of the leaderboard. However, he never felt entirely secure, especially on a back nine where each par save required immense effort.
The 18th hole epitomized the day’s challenge. Leading Morikawa by one stroke, both players hit approach shots that landed hard and rolled off the green into the rough. Each chipped to about five feet from the hole. Scheffler then sank his putt to clinch the win, his fist pump revealing the day’s intensity and pressure. Adding to the moment’s significance was a handshake with tournament host Jack Nicklaus and the presence of his month-old son, Bennett, at his first PGA Tour event.
Morikawa, who has been in the final group of both majors this year, remained in close contention throughout. A 30-foot birdie putt on the par-3 12th hole kept him on Scheffler’s heels. Morikawa shot a commendable 71, the only player among the final 13 groups to break par. Scheffler finished at 8-under for the tournament, earning a $4 million prize from this signature event, part of a $20 million purse. This victory pushes his total earnings for the year past $24 million, breaking the PGA Tour season earnings record he set just last year, an impressive feat given it’s only June.
Scheffler’s triumph also marks him as the first player since Tom Watson in 1980 to win five times on the PGA Tour before the U.S. Open. With Pinehurst No. 2 hosting the U.S. Open next week, Scheffler will enter as a formidable favorite at +300, looking to continue his extraordinary run.
