Tiger Woods, the living legend of golf, has been granted a unique exemption by the PGA Tour’s policy board, allowing him entry into all of the tour’s signature events. This decision, made on Tuesday, acknowledges Woods’ “exceptional lifetime achievement" and ensures his participation in the tour’s eight marquee tournaments, known for their substantial prize money and elevated FedEx Cup points despite their limited fields.
The policy board’s approval, in conjunction with the PGA Tour Enterprises board in Hartford, Conn., was reported by ESPN. A memo from the tour, as cited by ESPN, stated, “An additional sponsor exemption will be created to recognize Tiger Woods in his own category as a player who has reached an exceptional lifetime achievement threshold of 80-plus career wins."
Woods, who shares the record for the most PGA Tour victories at 82 with Sam Snead, has also amassed 15 major titles, second only to Jack Nicklaus’ 18. At 48 years old, Woods has been sparing in his tournament appearances following a severe car accident in February 2021 that left him with significant leg injuries.
In the past year, Woods’ competitive outings have been limited. He managed a tie for 45th at the Genesis Invitational, where he serves as host, and withdrew after making the cut at the Masters in his two starts of the season. This year, Woods has only played in four events, withdrawing mid-tournament at the Genesis Invitational and missing the cut at both the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open. His sole completed event was the Masters, where he finished 60th. Woods is slated to compete at the Open Championship in Scotland in mid-July.
The PGA Tour’s schedule includes the Travelers Championship this week in Cromwell, Conn., as the last of the eight signature events. The other prestigious tournaments are The Sentry, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, The Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, Wells Fargo Championship, and the Memorial. Notably, the Genesis, Arnold Palmer Invitational, and Memorial have 36-hole cuts, while the other signature events do not. However, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan indicated during Tuesday’s meeting that there are ongoing discussions about introducing cuts at all signature tournaments.
