In a dramatic turn of events, Taylor Ward’s two-run double into the left-center gap drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, propelling the Los Angeles Angels to a thrilling 4-3 victory over the New York Yankees on Tuesday night, snapping a three-game losing streak.
Ward wasted no time, attacking Clay Holmes’ first pitch and sending it soaring over the head of Yankees’ left fielder Alex Verdugo. The ball rolled to the wall, allowing multiple runs to score.
“That’s the big hit we’ve been looking for,” manager Ron Washington said. “We’ve been putting ourselves in position, and Taylor came through for us.”
This marked only the second time in 29 games that the Angels have won when trailing after seven innings, showcasing their resilience.
The Angels have struggled at home, winning just seven of their last 26 games at home. The large contingent of New York fans in attendance made it feel like a road game.

The Angels’ bullpen shined, with Matt Moore (1-1) earning the win as they retired the last 12 Yankees hitters.
Despite an early home run from Juan Soto, his 15th of the season, the Yankees couldn’t muster any late-game heroics. Soto, who has been on a power surge with five homers in seven games, finished with two hits and two RBIs.
Yankees starter Nestor Cortes was solid, allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. Cortes has been impressive, giving up only three runs (two earned) over his last 17 1/3 innings.
Cortes’ outing helped the Yankees set an MLB record for their starters, who have gone at least five innings and allowed two runs or fewer in 15 consecutive games.
