Leg 1: Dodgers ML
After stumbling into the All-Star break, the Los Angeles Dodgers should have welcomed the time off to regroup, refocus, and freshen up. They’re 6.5 games back of the National League lead. Given Boston’s strength in recent weeks, they can’t expect to walk through the Red Sox tonight. Still, the Dodgers will have the better starting pitcher in Gavin Stone, the better offense, and will play in their home building. This team needs to kick off the second half of the season the right way, so we’ll expect them to win tonight.
Leg 2: Gavin Stone 5+ Strikeouts
Stone didn’t have a great two starts in July, but before those outings, he recorded at least five strikeouts in six of his last seven starts, showcasing his strikeout upside every time he took the mound. Tonight, he’ll face a Red Sox lineup that has collectively struck out at a 29.0% clip as a team in July, good for the second-highest mark in baseball. Unless Stone gets shelled early, he’ll be in the game long enough to rack up enough strikeouts against this lineup.
Leg 3: Shohei Ohtani 2+ Total Bases
The Red Sox will put Nick Pivetta on the mound tonight, and Shohei Ohtani has a ton of extra-base success against him. He’s gone 4-9 at the plate with two home runs and a double, so we’ll look for him to get us two total bases.
Leg 4: Freddie Freeman 1+ Hit
Freddie Freeman has gone .364 in his career against Pivetta across 33 at-bats. He’s a noticeably better hitter at home and against right-handed pitching, where he’s batting .351 in that scenario. That’s good enough to expect a single hit of some sort.
Leg 5: Rafael Devers 2+ Total Bases
Rafael Devers has been one of baseball’s most underrated stars in recent weeks as the Red Sox have continued to climb up the standings, so we’ll look for him to get us two total bases tonight. He’s batting .327 on the season against right-handed pitching and also posts an absurd .713 slugging percentage. Expect him to get us two hits or an extra-base hit against the righty Stone. Ideally, he can get his two total bases without impacting our Dodgers’ ML leg too much!
