William Contreras – C, Milwaukee Brewers (+1800)
William Contreras, an All-Star with the Braves in 2022, won the Silver Slugger Award and received some down-ballot NL MVP support last year, finishing 11th in MVP voting during his first season with the Brewers.
In 2024, the 26-year-old has solidified his position as the best catcher in the NL. He's currently hitting .305 with an .833 OPS and 2.5 fWAR, contributing significantly to the Brewers' lead in the NL Central.

Mookie Betts – SS, Los Angeles Dodgers (+140)
Mookie Betts is the frontrunner due to his phenomenal April, where he batted .340 with a .957 OPS. He leads NL position players with a 3.3 fWAR. Though defensive metrics are mixed on his shortstop performance—he has two defensive runs saved but -7 outs above average—it's impressive for him to tackle such a demanding position at age 31.
Since joining the Dodgers, Betts has twice finished second in NL MVP voting (2020 and 2023). If he clinches the NL MVP in 2024, he’ll be the second player in MLB history to win MVPs in both leagues, having previously won the AL MVP with the Boston Red Sox in 2018, joining Hall of Famer Frank Robinson.
Bryce Harper – 1B, Philadelphia Phillies (+400)
Bryce Harper is striving to become the 11th player in MLB history to win three MVP awards, joining Mike Trout as the only active players with this achievement. In his first full season playing first base, Harper has adjusted well, ranking among the NL leaders in home runs (15), RBIs (46), walks (43), and fWAR (2.7).
Additionally, the Phillies boast the best record in the NL, although Harper's previous MVP wins in 2015 and 2021 occurred during seasons when his team missed the postseason.
Shohei Ohtani – DH, Los Angeles Dodgers (+425)
It seems no one informed Shohei Ohtani that he’s supposed to take a break from winning MVPs this season just because he isn’t pitching. While it might take Ohtani hitting 50 home runs to become the first full-time DH to win an MVP, would anyone be surprised if he achieves that? Like Betts, if Ohtani secures the NL MVP this year, he’ll be the second player in history to win MVPs in both leagues. And, like Harper, if Ohtani wins this year’s NL MVP, he’ll join his former teammate Trout as the only active players with three MVP awards.

Fernando Tatis Jr. – RF, San Diego Padres (+1000)
Fernando Tatis Jr. has previously achieved two top-four finishes in NL MVP voting, including a third-place finish in 2021. Although his current hitting performance isn't quite at his 2020 and 2021 levels, an .828 OPS is still impressive, especially if the Padres make the playoffs.
Last year, Tatis won the Platinum Glove as the NL's best defender, with 29 defensive runs saved and 11 outs above average in his first season as a right fielder. This season, he hasn't matched that defensive prowess, with -3 DRS and zero OAA. Improving his fielding performance could significantly strengthen his MVP case.
Marcell Ozuna – DH, Atlanta Braves (+1600)
Like Ohtani, Marcell Ozuna will need to overcome the DH stigma to win the MVP, a feat Hall of Famers Edgar Martinez and David Ortiz never achieved. His off-field history also makes it unlikely he'll garner widespread support outside of Atlanta—and even from some within.
However, in terms of performance, Ozuna has been one of the league's most productive hitters this year. The two-time All-Star currently leads the NL in home runs (18), RBIs (55), slugging percentage (.602), OPS (.994), and OPS+ (178).
