5 Potential Upsets for Saturday’s College Basketball Slate

No. 13 Texas A&M at South Carolina - 8:30 p.m. ET
Time: 8:30 p.m. ET on Saturday
How to Watch: SEC Network
South Carolina to upset a ranked team? Is that a typo? It is not; hear me out. The South Carolina Gamecocks have a losing record, and they are dead last in the SEC, with no wins in the league. This team has not given up, and Texas A&M goes to Columbia knowing the Gamecocks are flailing. The Aggies may take South Carolina lightly and find themselves locked in a tight ballgame late, just like Auburn and Florida when they played at South Carolina. The Gamecocks lost those games by a total of four points, and if Texas A&M isn’t ready to play, South Carolina could surprise.

No. 20 Missouri at No. 14 Mississippi State - 1:00 p.m. ET
Time: 1:00 p.m. ET on Saturday
How to Watch: SEC Network
The Missouri Tigers are on the biggest surprises of the season. Dennis Gates has UM at 16-4 and is in third place in the loaded SEC. Mississippi State is ranked 14th in the country, but Missouri will not be overwhelmed by the road atmosphere at “The Hump.” They already had an impressive road win at Florida just a couple of weeks ago. The Bulldogs have lost four of their past six games, including home losses to Kentucky and Alabama. A win for Missouri would place them into very unexpected contention for a bye in the SEC Tournament.
No. 1 Auburn at No. 23 Ole Miss - 2:00 p.m. ET
Time: 2:00 p.m. ET on Saturday
How to Watch: ESPN
Upsets are most likely to occur when a ranked team goes on the road to face a capable conference opponent. That scenario will play out on Saturday afternoon as the No. 1 Auburn Tigers invade Oxford to play the ranked Ole Miss Rebels. Auburn has been rolling and sits at 19-1, but they faced a similar situation recently as they traveled to Athens to play then No. 23 Georgia. Auburn won that game, but it was only a two-point victory, and Ole Miss is a better squad than the UGA Bulldogs. Ole Miss desperately needs a marquee victory, and Chris Beard’s crew will get their chance as the calendar turns to February.
No. 17 Wisconsin at Northwestern - 2:00 p.m. ET
Time: 2:00 p.m. ET on Saturday
How to Watch: FS1
The Northwestern Wildcats are tricky out in Evanston, and they get a chance to pull off an upset as the 17th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers come to town on Saturday. The Wildcats already have home wins over Illinois, UNLV, Maryland, and Indiana, while the Badgers have lost two straight road games (UCLA and Maryland). Chris Collins has a good group that consistently plays hard, and they’ll be ready on Saturday afternoon.
No. 22 Texas Tech at No. 6 Houston - 6:00 p.m. ET
Time: 6:00 p.m. ET on Saturday
How to Watch: ESPN2
The Houston Cougars are 17-3 and have soared into the nation’s elite teams as they remain unbeaten in the Big 12 under head coach Kelvin Sampson. The Cougars, as usual, are tough defensively, but they have proven they can win shootouts as well (at Kansas 92-86). The Cougars will likely continue winning at home but keep an eye on their matchup with the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Grant McCasland, now in his second season in Lubbock, is a terrific coach, and they have won seven of their past eight games, with the lone loss coming to Iowa State by one point. Texas Tech plays a style that will make things difficult for the Cougars, and this will be an extremely physical contest.
