5. USC Trojans
If Aidan Mahaney wanted to stay in California but take a step up to power conference basketball, the USC Trojans would be a good choice. Eric Musselman is the new head coach for the Trojans and has shown a willingness to invest heavily in the transfer portal. The results have been mixed, but there is energy surrounding the USC program, and Musselman deploys a player-friendly system.
1. Michigan Wolverines
Under head coach Randy Bennett, Saint Mary’s has become a beacon of consistency. They must find a way to continue that consistency without lead guard Aidan Mahaney as the California native enters the transfer portal to play his final two college basketball seasons elsewhere. Mahaney averaged 13.9 points in his two seasons with the Gaels. He’s a bulk perimeter shooter that has several options. The one that jumps off the page is the Michigan Wolverines. New head coach Dusty May hired Justin Joyner away from Saint Mary’s to be his associate head coach. Joyner was the primary recruiter for Mahaney when he committed to Saint Mary’s, and Michigan has a wide-open hole at guard. Many felt FAU transfer Johnell Davis would fill that hole, but Davis has reportedly been denied admission into UM.
Michigan 2025 NCAA Title Odds: +5500
2. UConn Huskies
Dan Hurley’s UConn Huskies are attempting to threepeat as National Champions but will need to do so with a nearly entirely new starting lineup. All three starting guards will have either graduated or headed to the NBA Draft. For now, the Huskies will rely on unproven young players to step up. Aidan Mahaney would provide a level of perimeter shooting that is not on the Connecticut roster and is strong on pick-and-roll plays, something that Hurley could utilize with the lob skills of Samson Johnson. If Mahaney wanted a different experience than in California, he could make the cross-country trek to Storrs.
UConn 2025 NCAA Title Odds: +1400
3. Kentucky Wildcats
Mark Pope is working hard to assemble a roster that can be competitive and can establish the type of program he wants to have at Kentucky. Aidan Mahaney and Pope will have some knowledge of each other from Pope’s time at BYU. The Cougars' final season in the West Coast Conference was the freshman season for Mahaney at Saint Mary’s. The Gaels did not operate at the same tempo as Pope’s BYU teams, but Mahaney should be a good fit for Kentucky thanks to his perimeter shooting. The cultural change from California to the Bluegrass State would be drastic, but the fit on the court would be a good one.
Kentucky 2025 NCAA Title Odds: +4000
4. Florida Gators
Florida Gators head coach Todd Golden led a fun offense in Gainesville as Florida made the NCAA Tournament as a seven-seed. Golden is a coach on the rise, but the Gators lost both starting guards and need to rebuild the roster. Golden has an interesting connection to Aidan Mahaney. Golden played collegiately for Randy Bennett at Saint Mary’s, and Mahaney would be a good fit for the uptempo system. Still, he might not be interested in going from Moraga to Gainesville.
