Horizon League Tournament Best Bet: Green Bay (+950)
We're hopping on the chaos train and backing Green Bay to continue its dream season. Looking at their 1-4 stretch to close out the season after Reynolds's injury, it's obvious they missed him, and his return would change everything for their hopes. We will bank on that return and grab this price at +950 while we can. This team is clearly better than that number when they have their superstar in the lineup.
Horizon League Overview
Chaos has found its home in the Horizon League Tournament for the better part of the past decade. Just once in the past eight editions of the tournament has the top seed gone on to claim the auto bid. We could see more of the same this season. With three teams sitting at +300 or shorter odds to be the winner, there should be plenty of unpredictability once this gets underway.
Could Youngstown State reach its first dance in 47 years? Is Wright State capable of repeating 2022's magic with a superstar back on the roster? Will the sport's longest-tenured head coach, Greg Kampe, and Oakland find its way back into the madness for the first time since 2011? Or could we see someone come out of nowhere altogether? Let's take a look.
Horizon League Tournament Favorite: Youngstown State (+200)
Despite being the second seed in this field, Youngstown State takes the crown as the narrow betting favorite thanks to having the highest ranking on KenPom in the league. The Penguins are looking to avenge falling short as last year's top seed after being upset by Northern Kentucky in the semifinals.
In a league where defense isn't the strong suit, having the 142nd-ranked defense in college basketball is enough to claim the top spot in the Horizon. If the Penguins can defend at that high level in Indianapolis, it could be their secret sauce to snatching the auto bid.
Horizon League Tournament Challenger: Wright State (+270)
With Tanner Holden returning to Dayton after a failed season with Ohio State, it launched Wright State's attempt to run it back with the nucleus of Holden, Trey Calvin, and A.J. Braun for one last dance. It got the Raiders to a third-place finish in the Horizon this year, boasting an offensive efficiency metric ranking 31st in the nation as the only team in the league inside the top 125.
The struggle has been on the defensive end of the floor where Wright State is bottom-20 in the nation, allowing 80 points in ten of their 13 losses this season. While their offense can win them any game in the field, their defense is more than capable of losing them any game as well.
Horizon League Tournament Dark Horse: Green Bay (+950)
Green Bay head coach Sundance Wicks is conducting the biggest turnaround in the sport this season. With a preseason ranking of 351st in KenPom and being picked dead-last in the preseason poll, nobody gave the Phoenix a chance to even be average in 2023-24. Wicks has coached this team to a top-three finish via a season sweep over Wright State, a road win over Youngstown State, and a home triumph over Oakland.
They have proven capable of beating every team in the league, making them a legitimate contender. To add fuel to the Phoenix fire, leading scorer Noah Reynolds has hinted at being back in time for Thursday's quarterfinal on his Instagram story. His return would be massive for their hopes of competing with the upper echelon of this league in Indianapolis.
