45) Joey Slackman, Defensive Tackle
Former Team: Penn (IVY) | New Team: Florida (SEC)
247Sports Rank: 48 | On3 Rank: 36 | Rivals Rank: 26 | Average: 32.3
Making the jump from the Ivy League to the SEC is one of the biggest jumps any transfer can make, as Joey Slackman is the highest-rated FCS player on nearly everyone's 2024 portal rankings. In his second season at Penn, he started in ten games and was named honorable mention All-Ivy after leading the Quakers with 4.5 sacks. Slackman made a significant leap last season when he was the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year and made multiple All-American teams.
Can he make an even more significant jump this season? Florida is banking on it. At 300 pounds, his ability to get into the offensive backfield and the skills he learned as a wrestler prepared him for trench battles, where low man often wins. Slackman understands how to play with leverage and how to use his hands. What a wild ride for a kid from Long Island who went to Penn to wrestle in 2019 and didn't return to football until 2021.
2023 Stats: 49 tackles, 4 sacks, 12 TFLs, 2 PDs, 1 FF
National Championship Odds: Penn N/A | Florida +30000
1) Caleb Downs, Safety
Former Team: Alabama (SEC) | New Team: Ohio State (B1G)
247Sports Rank: 1 | On3 Rank: 1 | Rivals Rank: 1 | Average: 1
The Ohio State Buckeyes have been the biggest beneficiary of the mass exodus out of Tuscaloosa following Nick Saban's retirement, headlined by the addition of freshman All-American Caleb Downs. Coming off a season in which he cracked triple digits in tackles, the former Crimson Tide is close to being the consensus top player in the transfer portal. In addition to his tackling prowess, Downs is athletic, with tremendous instincts and excellent range as a pass defender. A skilled player with the ball, the defender who probably could play running back, can be an effective punt returner. The sky's the limit for the likely preseas0n All-American.
2023 Stats: 101 tackles, 1 FF, 1 FR, 2 INTs
National Championship Odds: Alabama +100 | Ohio State +440
2) Kadyn Proctor, Offensive Tackle
Former Team: Alabama (SEC) | New Team: Iowa (B1G)
247Sports Rank: 2 | On3 Rank: 5 | Rivals Rank: 4 | Average: 3.67
Another former Alabama stud five-star freshman All-American headed to Big Ten country, Kadyn Proctor, is returning home after originally spurning the Iowa Hawkeyes for the Crimson Tide. It's not often a true freshman gets the nod at left tackle at any level of college football, let alone a powerhouse like Alabama, but that's how highly Nick Saban thought of Proctor. After experiencing ups and downs, the 6'7" giant settled in and began to dominate in the trenches. On Championship Saturday, Proctor was the highest-rated offensive lineman to play that day. Iowa was once the proud producer of NFL O-linemen on the regular, but that has changed over the past couple of seasons. That will change when Proctor is eligible for the 2026 NFL Draft, where he's already projected to be a top-ten pick.
National Championship Odds: Alabama +100 | Iowa +25000
3) Evan Stewart, Wide Receiver
Former Team: Texas A&M (SEC) | New Team: Oregon (B1G)
247Sports Rank: 5 | On3 Rank: 4 | Rivals Rank: 3 | Average: 4
Part of Texas A&M's much-ballyhooed 2022 recruiting class, Evan Stewart didn't disappoint, stepping in and recording 53 receptions as a true freshman. While his receptions dropped as a sophomore, Stewart's yards per catch and touchdown production increased. There's no doubt he has No. 1 wide receiver talent. A high school track star, Stewart is an explosive pass catcher with speed to burn with impressive acceleration. At his best in intermediate and deep routes, the former five-star recruit tracks the ball well and can make acrobatic catches. While he's not the most powerful after the catch or as a blocker, Stewart is ready to have a big season, especially with Dillon Gabriel throwing him the football in Eugene.
2023 Stats: 38 receptions, 514 yards, 13.5 YPC, 4 TDs
National Championship Odds: Texas A&M +4000 | Oregon +850
4) Nic Scourton, EDGE
Former Team: Purdue (B1G) | New Team: Texas A&M (SEC)
247Sports Rank: 14 | On3 Rank: 11 | Rivals Rank: 17 | Average: 14
The first player on this list not to come from the SEC, Nic Scourton, is joining the premiere conference after a breakout sophomore season with Purdue. He's also the only player in the top five whose coach didn't change this offseason, although Ryan Walter didn't recruit him to West Lafayette (current Louisville coach Jeff Brohm did). A bit underrated, Scourton is arguably the most proven commodity in the transfer portal. Coming off a double-digit sack season, among his 15 tackles for loss, the edge rusher brings elite size at 280 pounds. Still only 19 years old, Scourton is an explosive athlete who blends power and agility, making him versatile front-seven pieces. He can play with his hand off the ground, in a three-point stance, or even shift inside in obvious passing situations. The man is a menace who played some of his best football against the toughest competition this season (see games versus Michigan and Ohio State).
2023 Stats: 50 tackles, 10 sacks, 1 FF, 3 PDs
National Championship Odds: Purdue +100000 | Texas A&M +4000
5) Walter Nolen, Defensive Lineman
Former Team: Texas A&M (SEC) | New Team: Ole Miss (SEC)
247Sports Rank:3 | On3 Rank:2 | Rivals Rank:2 | Average:2.33
Another member of Jimbo Fisher's heralded recruiting class, Walter Nolen, entered college football as one of the top prospects coming out of Tennessee, ranked No. 2 overall in the Class of 2022. At his best, Nolen is one of the most dominant athletes in the SEC, and the potential he brings to the defensive line is terrifying. The interior lineman has been outstanding but not quite dominant through two seasons in Aggie Land. Two years after headlining Texas A&M's No. 1 recruiting class, Nolan anchors Lane Kiffin's highly-rated transfer class. The interior lineman is blessed with a quick first step and is stout against the run, with long arms to keep offensive linemen from getting into his body. He needs to be more consistent, particularly with his hands.
2023 Stats: 37 tackles, 4 sacks, 1 PD
National Championship Odds: Texas A&M +4000 | Ole Miss +1500
6) Cayden Green, Offensive Tackle
Former Team: Oklahoma (SEC) | New Team: Missouri (SEC)
247Sports Rank: 10 | On3 Rank: 16 | Rivals Rank: 12 | Average: 12.7
Coming out of Missouri, Cayden Green was a top 100 recruit (No. 98 on 247Sports composite rankings) who outplayed his recruiting ranking as a true freshman for the Oklahoma Sooners. Green played in 11 games, including five starts at guard, making the jump after taking over in-game in OU’s big win versus Texas. He played at a very high level and, at 6’5” and 316 pounds, has the size and length to shift outside to offensive tackle. The return home is a big boom for the home state team, as Missouri suffered multiple losses to their offensive line. Green has three years of eligibility remaining, but don’t be surprised to see him emerge as a first-round pick following his junior campaign.
National Championship Odds: Oklahoma +7000 | Missouri +3500
7) Isaiah Bond, Wide Receiver
Former Team: Alabama (SEC) | New Team: Texas (SEC)
247Sports Rank: 4 | On3 Rank: 7 | Rivals Rank: 15 | Average: 8.67
The third former Alabama Crimson Tide in the top ten, Isaiah Bond, is our second-highest-rated pass catcher in the transfer portal. Hailing from Buford, Georgia, Bond was a celebrated recruit (52nd overall on the 247Sports Composite) in the 2022 Class. Some services listed him as a safety before he carved out his niche as a wide receiver at Alabama. Following an early-season injury to Ja’Corey Brooks in 2023, Bond emerged as a go-to guy and led the Crimson Tide in receptions, including the incredible game-winning touchdown catch at Auburn to keep Alabama’s CFP hopes alive. Despite not having the most physically imposing presence at 5’11” and 182 pounds, Bond’s exceptional speed sets him apart. This quality is particularly crucial for Texas, which faces the departure of its top four receivers from the prior season, paving the way for Bond to assume a starting role. The team is poised to use him as a primary deep threat, with Texas welcoming back quarterback Quinn Ewers (and Arch Manning).
2023 Stats: 48 receptions, 668 yards, 13.9 YPC, 4 TDs
National Championship Odds: Alabama +100 | Texas +700
8) Lance Heard, Offensive Tackle
Former Team: LSU (SEC) | New Team: Tennessee (SEC)
247Sports Rank: 19 | On3 Rank: 9 | Rivals Rank: 9 | Average: 12.3
A five-star recruit from Neville High School in Monroe, Lance Heard was the No. 3 offensive tackle and No. 2 player from the State of Louisiana per the 247SportsComposite rankings in 2023. He earned freshman All-SEC honors when he played in 12 games, including one start. Heard saw 195 offensive snaps and another 88 on special teams. The problem was that LSU returned a pair of All-SEC offensive tackles in Will Campbell and Emery Jones, who Heard backed up as a freshman.
By transferring to Tennessee, the Louisiana native is giving himself an opportunity to start as a sophomore and potentially pave the way to the NFL Draft in 2026. However, he does have three seasons of eligibility. He is 6'6" and 240 pounds and already has a prototypical size for the position. A better pass blocker than a run blocker at this point in his career, Heard has flashed the ability to play at a high level but needs to do a better job of avoiding penalties.
National Championship Odds: LSU +1500 | Tennessee +3000
9) Quinshon Judkins, Running Back
Former Team: Ole Miss (SEC) | New Team: Ohio State (B1G)
247Sports Rank: 8 | On3 Rank: 6 | Rivals Rank: 8 | Average: 7.33
As a true freshman, Quinshon Judkins burst onto the college football scene with an exceptional debut season at Ole Miss in 2022. Amassing 1,567 rushing yards with an average of 5.7 yards per attempt in the challenging SEC, Judkins far exceeded expectations for a player who wasn’t listed among the top 50 high school running backs by 247Sports, coming in as a three-star recruit. His remarkable speed, agility in open spaces, and decisive running quickly became his hallmarks. However, his sophomore campaign saw a decline in performance, with reductions in his total rushing yards and average yards per carry, which fell by 1.4 yards. Looking ahead, Judkins is poised to enhance the Ohio State running game, joining forces with TreVeyon Henderson, a former 5-star recruit with explosive capabilities but hampered by injuries, leading to Ohio State’s inconsistent run game. Integrating Judkins into the OSU offense should allow the duo to maintain their health.
2023 Stats: 1,158 yards, 4.3 YPC, 15 rushing TDs
National Championship Odds: Ole Miss +1500 | Ohio State +40
10) Parker Brailsford, Center
Former Team: Washington (B1G) | New Team: Alabama (SEC)
247Sports Rank: 21 | On3 Rank: 18 | Rivals Rank: 19 | Average: 19.3
Unlike most players in the portal with three-plus years of eligibility remaining, Parker Brailsford is a proven performer at the highest level. After sitting out all of 2022, the pivot was a Freshman All-American and a second-team All-Pac-12 selection for Washington. He started all 15 games for the Huskies on the way to the National Championship Game, including the final 13 at center after opening the season at right guard.
Like many Huskies, it was long after Kalen DeBoer took that Alabama job before Brailsford hit the transfer portal, before following his coach to Tuscaloosa. At 275 pounds, he’s a bit light in the pants, but don’t tell that to opposing defensive linemen. Brailsford is athletic and has a high football IQ. Pro Football Focus has him as their highest-rated returning center in 2024.
National Championship Odds: Washington +12000 | Alabama +100
11) Dillon Gabriel, Quarterback
Former Team: Oklahoma (SEC) | New Team: Oregon (B1G)
247Sports Rank: 69 | On3 Rank: 15 | Rivals Rank: 14 | Average: 32.7
The addition of Dillon Gabriel gives Oregon two of the top quarterbacks in the transfer portal as he joins his third collegiate program. Once slated to join Army as an option quarterback, Gabriel landed an offer to UCF, where he flashed the ability to make plays with his legs and as a passer. As a true freshman in 2019, the southpaw averaged an impressive 9.2 yards per pass with 29 TD passes. He would go on to crack the 30-TD plateau the following season and has thrown at least 25 scoring strikes four times in his career.
The soon-to-be sixth-year senior hopes to follow in the cleats of Bo Nix. He is coming off a career season in Norman, where he set personal bests in passing yards (3,660), yards per pass (9.5), completion percentage (69.3), rushing yards (373), and rushing touchdowns (12 TDs). It was his second season with Oklahoma, which is something to consider, as most transfers have had the most success in Year 2 with their new team, Gabriel at OU and Nix at Oregon included. Nevertheless, by adding Gabriel, the Ducks have one of the most experienced quarterbacks in college football who is a playmaker and is not afraid to take shots down the field, although he does lack an elite arm.
2023 Stats: 3,660 yards, 69.3%, 9.5 YPA, 30 TDs-6 INTs, 12 rushing TDs
National Championship Odds: Oklahoma +7000 | Oregon +850
12) Princely Umanmielen, EDGE
Former Team: Florida (SEC) | New Team: Ole Miss (SEC)
247Sports Rank: 17 | On3 Rank: 12 | Rivals Rank: 20 | Average: 16.3
A four-star recruit and ranked No. 247 overall (per 247Sports composite rankings), Princely Umanmielen’s stock has only risen as a transfer candidate as one of the top edge rushers. Originating from Texas, he has consistently improved over four seasons at Gainesville. Despite his success as a Florida Gator, Umanmielen has opted for a fifth year in college football, which speaks volumes about his strategic career planning over an immediate jump to the 2024 NFL Draft. While there might be prospects with seemingly higher potential, Umanmielen is a proven commodity as a pass rusher with excellent quickness and length (6’5). He can improve in the bulk (255 pounds) and strength departments.
2023 Stats: 39 tackles, 7 sacks, 0 PDs
National Championship Odds: Florida +25000 | Ole Miss +1500
13) Jabbar Muhammad, Cornerback
Former Team: Washington (B1G) | Oregon (B1G)
247Sports Rank: 15 | On3 Rank: 10 | Rivals Rank: 18 | Average: 14.3
The Texas native, who began his career in the Big 12, is coming off a stellar season in Washington. Jabbar Muhammad is one of several players to bolt the Huskies following the departure of head coach Kalen DeBoer. In his lone season in the great northwest, Muhammad was a second-team All-Pac-12 performer who started all 15 games during Washington's run to the National Championship Game. An active coverman, he finished seventh in the country and set a UW single-season record with his 16 passes defenses.
Muhammad has 28 career starts, with the first 13 coming at Oklahoma State, where he was honorable mention All-Big 12. The fifth-year senior is expected to start for this third team in his third conference this fall, as Muhammad will be a crucial piece on Oregon's defense. He is a former high-school track star with excellent ball skills and coverage ability.
2023 Stats: 46 tackles, two sacks, 1 FR, 3 INTs, 16 PDs
National Championship Odds: Washington +12000 | Oregon +850
14) Cameron Ward, Quarterback
Former Team: Washington State | New Team: Miami (ACC)
247Sports Rank: 13 | On3 Rank: 8 | Rivals Rank: 6 | Average: 9
After spending two seasons at Washington State, Cam Ward was on the hunt for new opportunities. With ambitions of reaching the pros, he even threw his hat into the ring for the 2024 NFL Draft before opting to write a new chapter in his collegiate career at the University of Miami. Ward began his career at Incarnate Word before leveling up to the Pac-12 at Wazzu. He was an improved player across the board, increasing his completion percentage, passing yards, touchdowns, rushing yards, and rushing touchdowns (8) in 2023 while throwing fewer interceptions and taking fewer sacks. His most impressive leap came in yards per pass, from 6.5 to 7.7 this past season. While Ward isn’t the most talented quarterback in the portal, he’s a proven commodity compared to many other signal callers who have switched programs this offseason. For the Hurricanes, Ward represents a potential turning point, the essential addition that could thrust Miami into the national forefront.
2023 Stats: 3,735 yards, 66.6%, 7.7 YPA, 25 TDs-7 INTs
National Championship Odds: Washington State +100000 | New Team: Miami +000
15) Trevor Etienne, Running Back
Former Team: Florida (SEC) | New Team: Georgia (SEC)
247Sports Rank: 33 | On3 Rank: 19 | Rivals Rank: 16 | Average: 22.7
In two seasons with the Florida Gators, Trevor Etienne did not disappoint. In his freshman campaign, he rushed for 719 yards with an impressive average of 6.1 yards per carry and six touchdowns. His sophomore year saw him reach new personal bests in yards (753) and touchdowns (8). Additionally, Etienne developed into a weapon in the passing game, catching 21 passes for 172 yards, averaging 8.2 yards per reception. Even more is expected of him in that department.
Rather than share duties again with Montrell Johnson Jr., he transferred to the archrival Georgia Bulldogs. With Georgia's top two rushers, Daijun Edwards and Kendall Milton, off to the NFL, the door is open for Etienne to emerge as the feature back in Athens before he joins big brother Travis Etienne at the next level. He is a proven playmaker who brings speed, agility, and excellent vision to the UGA backfield with two years remaining eligibility.
2023 Stats: 753 yards, 5.7 YPC, 8 rushing TDs
National Championship Odds: Florida +25000 | Georgia +300
16) Keon Sabb, S
Former Team: Michigan (B1G) | New Team: Alabama (SEC)
247Sports Rank: 55 | On3 Rank: 31 | Rivals Rank: 24 | Average: 36.7
A top 100 recruit in the Class of 2022, Keon Sabb was a significant flip for Michigan from Clemson. He saw limited action as a true freshman before becoming a critical piece on a title-winning defense in Ann Arbor as a sophomore, where he appeared in 14 games, including five starts at safety. One of those starts came in the CFP National Championship Game when Sabb recorded six tackles and broke up two passes against Washington.
He was slated to be an essential contributor in 2024 for the Wolverines. Still, with regular starters Rod Moore and Makari Paige returning for their senior seasons, Sabb would likely take on a reserve role again. When Caleb Downs left Alabama for Ohio State, the top transfer in this class, it left an opening in the Crimson Tide’s secondary. Sabb is a reliable open-field tackler with the range to handle the back end of the secondary in coverage and the potential to play some slot. He played just four games as a true freshman, which means Sabb has three seasons of eligibility remaining.
2023 Stats: 28 tackles, 2 INTs, 4 passes defensed
National Championship Odds: Michigan +1600 | Alabama +1400
17) Dante Moore, Quarterback
Former Team: UCLA (B1G) | New Team: Oregon (B1G)
247Sports Rank: 9 | On3 Rank: 13 | Rivals Rank: 7 | Average: 9.67
Hailing from Martin Luther King High School in Detroit, Dante Moore was a top-five recruit in the 2023 class and could have gone to any school in the country. Moore first committed to Oregon before flipping to UCLA to play for Chip Kelly. The Bruins could offer something many suitors could not: a chance at immediate playing time. Moore saw action in nine games, including five starts.
He became the first UCLA quarterback to connect on multiple TD passes in his first three games since Brett Hundley in 2012 and tied the school's freshman record with three scoring strikes (held by Cade McNown and Josh Rosen). But it wasn't all roses in Pasadena for Moore, who struggled with accuracy and threw six interceptions in three Pac-12 starts. Still very talented, Moore is blessed with a big arm and athleticism. He will probably be best served sitting for a year playing behind fellow transfer Dillon Gabriel in Eugene and learning the position before taking over in 2025. He has three years of eligibility.
2023 Stats: 1,610 yards, 53.5%, 7.6 YPA, 11 TDs-9 INTs
National Championship Odds: UCLA +80000 | Oregon +850
18) Jamaree Caldwell, Defensive Tackle
Former Team: Houston (Big 12) | New Team: Oregon (B1G)
247Sports Rank: 24 | On3 Rank: 54 | Rivals Rank: 148 | Average: 75.33
After a season with Independence Community College, Jamaree Caldwell quickly became one of the top interior linemen and run defenders in the AAC as a sophomore. When Houston joined the Big 12 in 2023, the defender took advantage of the bigger stage. He continued to excel as a run-stopper while developing as a pass rusher and raising his stock as a prospect.
In 11 games, Caldwell recorded 6.5 sacks, including 5.5 in his final six contests. That’s rare production for an interior defensive lineman. The high school offensive lineman earned second-team All-Big 12 honors in just his second full season on defense. Tipping the scales at 235 pounds, the South Carolina native has the size that should allow him to handle the challenges of Big Ten trench play as he anchors Oregon’s D-line. He has one year of eligibility remaining.
2023 Stats: 27 tackles, 8.5 TFLs, 6.5 sacks, 1 FF
National Championship Odds: Houston +1600 | Oregon +1300
19) Trey Moore, EDGE
Former Team: UTSA (AAC) | New Team: Texas (SEC)
247Sports Rank: 22 | On3 Rank: 21 | Rivals Rank: 62 | Average: 35
After redshirting in 2021, Trey Moore burst onto the scene with 59 tackles, eight sacks, six pass breakups, and two forced fumbles coming off the edge on his way to freshman All-American honors. He broke Marcus Davenport’s single-season record for tackles for loss with 18. Moore was even more productive in 2023 when he recorded 14 sacks to earn AAC Defensive Player of the Year.
Despite his impressive numbers, Moore comes with doubters who will point out that all his sacks came in just six games, including 9.5 in three games. He wasn’t nearly as impactful when asked to step up in competition. The positive spin is that Moore is explosive, twitchy, and a hard worker with upside. But how will he hold up against SEC-caliber competition?
2023 Stats: 45 tackles, 14 sacks, one forced fumble, 3 passes defensed
National Championship Odds: UTSA +100000 | Texas +700
20) Juice Wells, Wide Receiver
Former Team: South Carolina (SEC) | New Team: Ole Miss (SEC)
247Sports Rank: 25 | On3 Rank: 20 | Rivals Rank: 33 | Average: 26
As a true freshman, Juice Wells put up an impressive 603 receiving yards at an 18.3 yards per catch clip at James Madison. He grew into the role as a No. 1 WR with 83 receptions for 1,250 yards and 15 TD catches as a sophomore, his best statistical season. Upon transfer to South Carolina in 2022, Wells would earn first-team All-SEC honors from the coaches as a junior (928 yards) as the team’s offensive MVP before a foot injury hampered his senior campaign.
If healthy, Wells is one of the most polished players in the transfer portal. He has reliable hands and can make tough catches and plays with the ball in his hands after the catch. While he might lack the elite measurables of a top-notch NFL prospect, he’s already proven what he can do in the SEC.
2023 Stats: 3 receptions, 37 yards, 12.3 YPC, 1 TD
National Championship Odds: South Carolina +25000 | Ole Miss +1500
21) Jamon Dumas-Johnson, Linebacker
Former Team: Georgia (SEC) | New Team: Kentucky (SEC)
247Sports Rank: 23 | On3 Rank: 37 | Rivals Rank: 54 | Average: 38
You will see other former Georgia defenders ranked higher than Jamon Dumas-Johnson on transfer rankings, but none of those players have proven themselves at the SEC level the way he has. The linebacker immediately impacted as a true freshman as a backup and on special teams. Dumas-Johnson broke out during his sophomore season when he wracked up 70 tackles, a team-high nine tackles for loss, four sacks, and three passes defensed as a big part of Georgia’s second-straight national championship team.
A fractured forearm ended his 2023 season prematurely as Dumas-Johnson missed the final five games. With a deep stable of uber-talented underclassmen at linebacker in Athens, playing time would have to be earned. True freshman CJ Allen shined in his absence. But don’t sell Dumas-Johnson short. As a sophomore, he was an All-SEC player and an outstanding blitzer (26 QB hurries was third on UGA in 2022). Also known as a vocal leader of the defense, Dumas-Johnson will provide a significant boost to Kentucky’s defense.
2023 Stats: 34 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 5.5 tackles for loss, 2 passes defensed
National Championship Odds: Georgia +300 | Kentucky +20000
22) Andrew Mukuba, Safety
Former Team: Clemson (ACC) | New Team: Texas (SEC)
247Sports Rank: 28 | On3 Rank: 40 | Rivals Rank: 29 | Average: 32.3
You can make the case that Andrew Mukuba played his best football in 2021 when he won ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year and was the first Clemson defensive back to start the team’s opener as a true freshman. Mukuba is highly active, solid in coverage, and even better at defending the run. The past couple of seasons have been solid but choppy for the Lonestar State native, partly due to being moved around the secondary, including seeing time at cornerback covering the slot.
When he hit the portal it was no surprise that Mukuba landed back in his home state with Texas, who employs his high school coach. He brings a wealth of experience (31 starts, 1,734 snaps, 20 pass breakups, 149 tackles) and some untapped potential. A speedster, Mukuba is aggressive, with good range in coverage and above-average tackling ability.
2023 Stats: 45 tackles, 2 TFLs, 7 passes defended
National Championship Odds: Clemson +3000 | Texas +700
23) Tyler Baron, EDGE
Former Team: Tennessee (SEC) | New Team: Louisville (ACC)
247Sports Rank: 18 | On3 Rank: 22 | Rivals Rank: 93 | Average: 44.3
A four-star recruit out of Knoxville, Tyler Baron was a perfect fit for Tennessee. He’s played at least ten games in all four seasons as a Volunteer, showing steady improvement, peaking with his career-best six sacks in 2023. It should be noted that four of Baron’s sacks came in out of conference play, with one of his two against SEC foes coming against cellar dweller Vanderbilt. Also, his 41 QB pressures were second on the team and among SEC leaders.
While versatility is one of his calling cards—the 6’5” 260-pounder flashed the ability to play outside linebacker, defensive end, and even slide inside on passing downs to provide an interior rush—he has expressed a desire to play exclusive edge. He initially committed to Ole Miss but ultimately flipped to Louisville, where he will play his final season of eligibility.
2023 Stats: 28 tackles, 10.5 TFLs, 6 sacks, 2 passes defended
National Championship Odds: Tennessee +3000 | Louisville +10000
24) Tacario Davis, Cornerback
Former Team: Arizona (Big 12) | New Team: Undecided
247Sports Rank: 58 | On3 Rank: 25 | Rivals Rank: 52 | Average: 45
While several other corners are rated higher than Tacario Davis, mostly based on their high school recruiting rankings, this California product is a proven commodity. In his second season in the desert, the Arizona Wildcat earned second-team All-Pac 12 honors from the AP.
Listed at 6’4”, Davis has elite length for a coverman and used his wingspan to get on his hands on the football 16 times. A key cog to Arizona’s surprising ten-win team, Davis remains in the transfer portal, the highest-rated player ahead of the spring window (opens April 15).2023 Stats: 25 tackles, 1 INT, 16 PDs
National Championship Odds: Arizona +15000
24) Julian Sayin, Quarterback
Former Team: Alabama (SEC) | New Team: Ohio State (B1G)
247Sports Rank: 6 | On3 Rank: 3 | Rivals Rank: 5 | Average: 4.7
Like Oregon, Ohio State has added their quarterback of the present (Will Howard) and potentially the future when they landed Julian Sayin in the transfer portal. With offers from Ohio State, LSU, Michigan, Texas, USC, and others, Sayin signed with Alabama last December, coming out of high school. According to the composite rankings provided by 247Sports, the California native was QB1 and the sixth overall recruit in the Class of 2024.
But I’m not sure if Sayin belongs in these rankings since he never even made it to spring football with the Crimson Tide, and many are including him as part of OSU’s recruiting class. Even as a transfer, he’s much higher on most lists (see above). Why isn’t Sayin in our top ten? Mainly because we haven’t seen him play college football. Unlike the players above him, the freshman still has to prove he plays at this level. Being a five-star guarantees nothing, but the promise is too high to ignore.
2023 Stats: None (Sayin was in high school)
National Championship Odds: Alabama +100 | Ohio State +40
26) Rocket Sanders, Running Back
Former Team: Arkansas (SEC) | New Team: South Carolina (SEC)
247Sports Rank: 51 | On3 Rank: 42 | Rivals Rank: 72 | Average: 53.3
Rocket Sanders is a difficult player to rank, a proven performer, and a huge question mark. After a strong true freshman season (578 yards, 5.1 YPC), Sanders emerged as one of the best running backs in the country for Arkansas during his second season.
As a sophomore, he put up over 1,700 scrimmage yards as a rusher (6.5 YPC) and receiver out of the backfield with 12 touchdowns for the Razorbacks to earn first-team All-SEC honors (AP, USA Today). Sanders gives South Carolina one of the conference’s premiere backs if healthy. There’s the rub. He was limited to six games in 2023 as he played through a knee injury suffered in the opener, only to have a torn labrum end his season.
2023 Stats: 209 rushing yards, 3.4 YPC, 2 TDs
National Championship Odds: Arkansas +40000 | South Carolina +25000
27) Riley Leonard, Quarterback
Former Team: Duke (ACC) | New Team: Notre Dame (Independent)
247Sports Rank: 42 | On3 Rank: 14 | Rivals Rank: 13 | Average: 23
Going into the 2023 Duke season, Riley Leonard had piqued the interest of NFL scouts; however, an injury-plagued campaign limited him from building on his sophomore numbers (2,967 yards, 20 TDs, 6 INTs). Even when Leonard played, he wasn’t always healthy. Raw but athletically gifted, the former Dukie has legit wheels, which he flashed by out-running the Clemson secondary in their season-opening upset over the Tigers.
As a sophomore, Leonard rushed for 699 yards (5.6 YPC) and 13 touchdowns. Expect a lot of comparisons to Sam Hartman, who also joined Notre Dame from the ACC. While Leonard doesn’t have the overall career numbers nor the glorious beard-hair combo of Harman, he’s a far more talented prospect with more significant upside. If the Irish can tap into his potential, he could be the best QB1 in South Bend in two decades.
2023 Stats: 1,102 yards, 57.6%, 6.7 YPA, 3 TDs-3 INTs, 2 rushing TDs
National Championship Odds: Duke +100000 | Notre Dame +2200
28) Malachi Nelson, Quarterback
Former Team: USC (B1G) | New Team: Boise State (MWC)
247Sports Rank: 94 | On3 Rank: 36 | Rivals Rank: 10 | Average: 46.67
Originally committed to Oklahoma, Malachi Nelson followed headman Lincoln Riley to USC. The California boy was a five-star recruit and the 12th player in the Class of 2023 per the 247Sports Composite rankings. Nelson saw action in his first game but then sat the remainder of his redshirt freshman year and will have four seasons of eligibility with Boise State.
Before USC’s Miller Moss went off in their bowl game, it was believed the Trojans would pursue a veteran passer and were linked to Will Howard, then of Kansas State. As a prospect, Nelson was considered an elite thrower and an adequate athlete. He’s the most talented prospect to join the Broncos and the highest-rated transfer to join a Group of Five program. More prominent schools did pursue him in the portal but may not have offered him the same likelihood of starting. A comfort level with Boise State’s OC-QB coach, Bush Hamdan, also helped his recruitment.
2023 Stats: None (Sayin was in high school)
National Championship Odds: USC +4500 | Boise State +480
29) Caiden Woullard, EDGE
Former Team: Miami-Ohio (MAC) | New Team: Oklahoma (SEC)
247Sports Rank: 27 | On3 Rank: 41 | Rivals Rank: 38 | Average: 35.33
Many are high on the group of five edge rusher, including SEC-bound Oklahoma. With Miami (OH), Caiden Woullard has flashed steady improvement after being overlooked as a prospect coming out of Ohio. He comes to Norman with 17.5 career tackles for loss, 14 of which were sacks. He’s a classic edge defender who is at his best in passing situations.
At 6’4 and 261 pounds, Woullard is blessed with excellent size. He fills OU’s need for depth at defensive end, where they must replace three departures. With starter Ethan Downs and former top-ten recruit (2023) Adepoju Adebawore back, playing time will be earned. He will be able to prove himself against the best this coming season.
2023 Stats: 41 tackles, 12 TFLs, 9.5 sacks, 2 FF
National Championship Odds: Miami-Ohio +1ooo00 | Oklahoma +7000
30) Dezz Ricks, Cornerback
Former Team: Alabama (SEC) | New Team: Texas A&M (SEC)
247Sports Rank: 20 | On3 Rank: 26 | Rivals Rank: 21 | Average: 22.3
Coming out of IMG Academy in Florida, Dezz Ricks was a five-star recruit in the 247Sports Composite rankings, listed as No. 25 overall in the class of 2023. He was rated as high as No. 17 by ESPN and was the No. 2 cornerback in the class by both ESPN and Rivals.
The Norfolk, Virginia native had his choice of schools, and he picked Alabama over LSU, Florida, and Florida State, among others. Ricks saw action in just two games as a true freshman, and expectations are still high for the coverman as he arrives in College Station with four years of eligibility remaining for Texas A&M.
2023 Stats: no stats
National Championship Odds: Alabama +100 | Texas A&M +4000
31) A.J. Harris, Cornerback
Former Team: Georgia (SEC) | New Team: Penn State (B1G)
247Sports Rank: 12 | On3 Rank: 23 | Rivals Rank: 25 | Average: 20
Another star cornerback from the recruiting class of 2023 who went to an SEC powerhouse. A.J. Harris was a high four-star recruit, rated 41st in the country per the 247Sports Composite and a five-star on 247 (27th overall). Harris was the top prospect out of Alabama, a consensus top-four CB in his class.
He signed with Georgia and saw action in seven games as a true freshman in a backup role. A potential playmaker, Harris had three punt returns and two kickoff returns for touchdowns as a high schooler. Penn State has to replace both starting corners from 2023, and Harris is the favorite to earn one of those spots.
2023 Stats: 8 tackles, 3 solo tackles
National Championship Odds: Georgia +300 | Penn State +2200
32) Will Howard, Quarterback
Former Team: Kansas State (Big 12) | New Team: Ohio State (B1G)
247Sports Rank: 39 | On3 Rank: 17 | Rivals Rank: 11 | Average: 22.3
A second-team All-Big 12 performer as a senior, Will Howard leaves Kansas State with 27 career starts (34 games) and as the program’s all-time leader in touchdown passes with 48. His completion percentage, yards, and TD passes in 2023 were all career highs; however, so were his interceptions, while his yards per pass dropped from 8.2 to 7.4. Howard can also be a playmaker with his legs, as he rushed for 921 yards, 4.1 YPC, and 19 scores as a Wildcat.
His dual-threat ability should fit in well in Chip Kelly’s offense, but it remains to be seen how much of an upgrade Howard is to Ohio State’s talent-laden quarterback room. Howard entered the portal partly because of the top-100 recruit (Class of 2023) Avery Johnson, KSU’s most heralded recruit in quite some time, who is poised to take over. The pressure will be even higher in Columbus, where it’s Natty or Bust. Howard will be learning a new offense with new teammates, and as we mentioned with Dillon Gabriel, transfer QBs usually take off in their second season with a new program.
2023 Stats: 2,643 yards, 61.3%, 7.4 YPA, 24 TDs-10 INTs, 9 rushing TDs
National Championship Odds: Kansas State +6000 | Ohio State +40
33) Amari Niblack, Tight End
Former Team: Alabama (SEC) | New Team: Texas (SEC)
247Sports Rank: 30 | On3 Rank: 32 | Rivals Rank: 45 | Average: 35.67
A four-star recruit (top 150), Amari Niblack started to flash his potential as a true sophomore. While his overall numbers are modest, tight ends usually take a little longer than receivers to make an impact at the college level. He also played on an Alabama unit that took about half the season to find itself as a passing offense.
Two impressive numbers were his 16.4 yards per catch (2.5 yards better than Isaiah Bond) and that 20 percent of his receptions went for touchdowns. Niblack has a good upside as a playmaker, both in the red zone and stretching the field. The tight end position has been a big part of Steve Sarkisian’s offense at Texas. Niblack is slatted to replace Ja’Tavion Sanders, and in Quinn Ewers, the Longhorns have a proven passer throwing him the football.
2023 Stats: 20 receptions, 327 yards, 16.4 YPC, 4 TD
National Championship Odds: Alabama +1400 | Texas +850
34) Marvin Jones Jr., EDGE
Former Team: Georgia (SEC) | New Team: Florida State (ACC)
247Sports Rank: 36 | On3 Rank: 24 | Rivals Rank: 22 | Average: 27.33
Coming out of American Heritage in Fort Lauderdale, Marvin Jones Jr. spurned the hometown Seminoles for the defending champion Georgia Bulldogs. A five-star recruit, he was ranked 24th in the 247Sports composite rankings in 2022. Playing time did not come easy on UGA’s star-studded defense. Jones Jr. did flash his upside, with nearly half his tackles in 2023 coming in the backfield as he earned a start in the SEC Championship Game.
The son of Florida State legend Marvin Jones (Butkus and Lombardi Award winner), the edge defender will be a legacy in Tallahassee, where the younger Jones will have two seasons of eligibility. Time will tell if Jones Jr. will reach the vast potential many saw in him as a recruit. He has a solid frame (6’5”/250 pounds) and elite athleticism.
2023 Stats: 12 tackles, 4.5 TFLs, 1 sack, 1 FF
National Championship Odds: Georgia +1600 | Florida State +1300
35) Deion Burks, Wide Receiver
Former Team: Purdue (B1G) | New Team: Oklah0ma (SEC)
247Sports Rank: 46 | On3 Rank: 80 | Rivals Rank: 31 | Average: 52.33
The diminutive receiver broke out as a redshirt sophomore in 2023 for Purdue, where Deion Burks emerged as the No. 1 target. He could make yards after the catch with his short-area quickness and stretch the field with his top-end speed. That was with inconsistent quarterback play (59.7 team completion percentage, 10.8 yards per completion). He's explosive and capable of making chunk plays.
While only 5'11, Burks added 15 pounds of muscle last offseason and tipped the scales at nearly 200 pounds. He's competitive and tough. The Oklahoma pass catcher also has impressive jumping ability and can go up and get the football. Burks joins a crowded Sooners receivers room, and with the ability to play outside the hashes and out of the slot, he'll find a role in Norman catching passes from rising sophomore Jackson Arnold. In addition to his receiving skills, Burks returned 14 kickoffs in 2022. He has two years of eligibility remaining.
2023 Stats: 47 receptions, 629 yards, 13.4 YPC, 7 TDs
National Championship Odds: Purdue +100000 | Oklah0ma +7000
36) Brock Vandagriff, Quarterback
Former Team: Georgia (SEC) | New Team: Kentucky (SEC)
247Sports Rank: 35 | On3 Rank: 34 | Rivals Rank: 60 | Average: 43
One of the most intriguing players in the transfer portal, Brock Vandagriff, was a highly coveted prospect coming out of high school, ranked the No. 4 quarterback and No. 17 recruit in the Class of 2021 per the 247Sports Composite rankings, a five-star recruit.
He played in five games (three pass attempts) in his first two seasons as Stetson Bennett led Georgia to back-to-back national titles. In 2023, the Georgia native lost the quarterback battle to Carson Beck and served as UGA’s backup when he threw his first two scoring strikes as a collegian. Now at Kentucky, Vandergriff is expected to finally have an opportunity to show if he can live up to the recruiting hype.
2023 Stats: 12 of 18 passing, 165 yards, 9.2 YPP, 2 TDs, 0 INTs
National Championship Odds: Georgia +300 | Kentucky +20000
37) Jaishawn Barham, Linebacker
Former Team: Maryland (B1G) | New Team: Michigan (B1G)
247Sports Rank: 89 | On3 Rank: 51 | Rivals Rank: 56 | Average: 65.3
A top-150 recruit (four-star) coming out of St. Francis Academy, keeping Jaishawn Barham home was a massive win for Maryland. With 59 tackles, four sacks, and a forced fumble, Barham had an outstanding true freshman season, and while his production dropped in 2023, he was still one of the better linebackers in the Big Ten. He's a versatile talent who can play both linebacker and edge.
Barham signed with Michigan in December, knowing the Wolverines would likely be looking to fill both starting linebacker positions. Playing behind Michigan's elite defensive tackles should allow Barham to run sideline-to-sideline. Also, expect new DC Wink Martindale to use the Maryland native as a blitzer and potentially as an edge rusher.
2023 Stats: 37 tackles, 1 PD, 3 sacks
National Championship Odds: Maryland +40000 | Michigan +2000
38) Kyle McCord, Quarterback
Former Team: Ohio State (B1G) | New Team: Syracuse (ACC)
247Sports Rank: 72 | On3 Rank: 47 | Rivals Rank: 30 | Average: 49.67
What if Kyle McCord wasn't hit as he attempted his final pass at Ohio State? Instead of an interception, McCord could have extended OSU's final drive and potentially led the Buckeyes to an upset over the eventual national champion and into the playoffs. His first season as a starter in Columbus would be viewed much differently than it is now, where McCord is a bit of a scapegoat for their third-straight loss to Michigan.
The bottom line is that he was a five-star recruit (247Composite), won the starting job over Devin Brown, and finished with excellent numbers across the board. Was McCord as good as Justin Fields or C.J. Stroud? No, but that's a nearly impossible standard. Before you get too down on McCord, compare him to Penn State's Drew Allar (who will have many preseason accolades). McCord out-played Allar head-to-head and was much better against Michigan. As a passer, McCord will upgrade Syracuse and the Organge's attack.
2023 Stats: 3,170 yards, 65.8%, 9.1 YPA, 24 TDs-6 INTs
National Championship Odds: Ohio State +40 | Syracuse +80000
39) RJ Oben, EDGE
Former Team: Duke (ACC) | New Team: Notre Dame (Independent)
247Sports Rank: 41 | On3 Rank: 74 | Rivals Rank: 119 | Average: 78
Like his former Duke teammate Riley Leonard, RJ Oben left Durham, North Carolina, for South Bend, Indiana. What does he bring to Notre Dame? The sixth-year senior has played 48 games with over 30 career starts and is among the most experienced players in the transfer portal.
As a redshirt sophomore, he recorded a career-high 26 tackles in his first season as a regular starter. In 2022, Oben recorded a career-best with 6.5 tackles for loss, and last season, he set a new personal best with five sacks. At 6'4" and 260 pounds, the NFL prospect has excellent size for an edge rusher who can anchor against the run and get after the quarterback. Former star ND offensive tackle Joe Alt said Oben was one of the best he went against in 2023.
2023 Stats: 17 tackles, 6 TFLs, 5 sacks
National Championship Odds: Duke +100000 | Notre Dame +2200
40) Toriano Pride Jr., Cornerback
Former Team: Clemson (ACC) | New Team: Missouri (SEC)
247Sports Rank: 45 | On3 Rank: 42 | Rivals Rank: 102 | Average: 63
A top-100 recruit (247Sports Composite), Toriano Pride Jr. was a key backup as a true freshman in 2022, recording 23 tackles with four pass breakups, an interception, a sack, and a safety. That's a pretty impressive first season on campus for a cornerback. However, Pride's production dipped last season as he continued in a reserve role in a deep and talented Clemson secondary.
In his only start, Pride recorded seven tackles and three pass breakups against Wake Forest, much of his sophomore production in one game. Bigger things are expected at Missouri, where the Tigers are replacing both starting corners. The St. Louis native has the athleticism, quickness, and twitchiness to match up with SEC receivers.
2023 Stats: 14 tackles, 4 PDs, 0 INTs
National Championship Odds: Clemson +3000 | Missouri +3500
41) LV Overton, EDGE
Former Team: Texas A&M (SEC) | New Team: Alabama (SEC)
247Sports Rank: 29 | On3 Rank: 53 | Rivals Rank: 36 | Average: 39.33
Yet another member of Texas A&M’s famed 2022 recruiting class to find himself in the transfer portal, LT Overton was a five-star recruit and the 14th player per the 247Sports Composite rankings. As a true freshman, he was impressively active for a defensive lineman with 31 tackles, including three for loss. After earning three starts in 2022, that production slipped as a sophomore when he started in just one game.
Alabama lost their top three pass rushers to the NFL Draft, so Nick Saban nabbed Overton out of the portal in December. It will be interesting to see how Bama uses the versatile Overton, who trimmed down to 265 from his high school playing weight of 280. The presumption was that he would bulk up to play end in Alabama’s 3-4 scheme, but new DC Kane Wommack uses a 4-3 front, which means Overton will likely remain on the edge.
2023 Stats: 17 tackles, 0 sacks
National Championship Odds: Texas A&M +4000 | Alabama +100
42) Nyland Green, Cornerback
Former Team: Georgia (SEC) | New Team: Purdue (B1G)
247Sports Rank: 11 | On3 Rank: 48 | Rivals Rank: 37 | Average: 32
As a high school recruit, Nyland Green was a top-100 player (four-star) in his class (2021) in the 247Sports Composite rankings and rated as a five-star (No. 19 overall) by the recruiting service in the 247 rankings. In his three seasons at Georgia, Green recorded 13 tackles. Green played in ten of UGA's 15 games on their way to a national title in 2022 and 13 games last season, all in a reserve role.
As talented as the Dawgs are, the cornerback didn't make enough of an impression to crack the second unit. Many believe the potential that made him highly sought after is still there. Green has elite size and athleticism. He will see more of the field at Purdue, and many expect him to have his chance as a starter. Headman Ryan Walters impressed with his ability to develop corners during his team as DC at Illinois, and the Boilermakers have a need at the position.
2023 Stats: 17 tackles, 6 TFLs, 5 sacks
National Championship Odds: Purdue +100000 | Georgia +300
43) Noah Rogers, Wide Receiver
Former Team: Ohio State (B1G) | New Team: NC State (ACC)
247Sports Rank: 37 | On3 Rank: 46 | Rivals Rank: 96 | Average: 59.67
Highly touted coming out of North Carolina, Noah Rogers was the No. 53 recruit in the 247Sports Composite rankings in the Class of 2023. It should come as no surprise that he did not see action as a true freshman. Ohio State had the best and deepest receiver room in the country.
The Buckeyes must replace Marvin Harrison Jr. but return Emeka Egbuka, two receivers rated ahead of Rogers in last year's class (they were OSU's top three recruits). They are also adding the No. 1 overall player in the Class of 2024, Jeremiah Smith, who is considered NFL-ready. Reps and receptions were not guaranteed in Columbus, and Rogers will have a better chance to play and potentially start at NC State. He has the athleticism, size, and hands to make an impact with his four remaining seasons of eligibility.
2023 Stats: None
National Championship Odds: Ohio State +40 | NC State +3500
44) Domani Jackson, Cornerback
Former Team: USC (B1G) | New Team: Alabama (SEC)
247Sports Rank: 42 | On3 Rank: 34 | Rivals Rank: 23 | Average: 33
This USC transfer is another former highly-touted cornerback recruit. Domani Jackson was a consensus five-star recruit out of Mater Dei and the No. 5 overall player in the 247Sports Composite. After recording two tackles in seven games as a true freshman, Jackson saw much more of the field in 2023. He has more experience than many of his fellow corners in the portal; however, he was part of a bad Trojans defense, so it was not all good.
The traits are there as the California native is athletic with prototypical length. The Trojans beat out Alabama for his services as a recruit, so it's no surprise that Jackson landed with the Crimson Tide as a transfer. With both starters from last year's team off to the NFL and several vital backups transferring, the opportunity is there for Jackson to start, and so far, Jackson has impressed in spring.
2023 Stats: 33 tackles, 3 PDs, 0 INTs
National Championship Odds: USC +4500 | Alabama +100
