NFL 2024 Season Preview: Most Overrated Team in Each AFC Division

AFC West: Los Angeles Chargers
Enough with Jim Harbaugh and the Los Angeles Chargers; this team still lacks talent. You may have the flashy coach and the great quarterback, but what else do you have? The running back room has no clear top choice, the wide receiver room is very thin, and the defense has stunk for the past few seasons. People are acting like Harbaugh can single-handedly will this team to wild-card contention, but you still need talent to win games! Luckily, Harbaugh is building this team the right way, and I’m excited to see how they look initially. The future is bright for the few Chargers fans that exist!
AFC East: New York Jets
The AFC East is entirely up in the air, and the New York Jets have become the trendy pick to win the division. I just can’t see the vision. Sure, on paper, they have all the talent in the world to make the postseason with solid skill positions and a great defense, but we’ve seen too many talented Aaron Rodgers-led teams in the past underachieve. As great as Rodgers is, after not playing for a year, are we counting on him to walk in as a 40-year-old coming off a devastating injury and be great? I’m not. The Jets very well may make the playoffs, but let’s pump the breaks on them running the table in the AFC.
AFC North: Baltimore Ravens
What’s the deal with this era of Baltimore Ravens football? Every year, people buy into them as a Super Bowl contender, and they continually come up short and squander under the brightest lights. We saw that last year as they lost the AFC championship game at home despite the Kansas City Chiefs playing mediocre football at best. Looking at the other NFC North squads, the Cincinnati Bengals are healthy, the Cleveland Browns are loaded with talent if they can get reliable quarterback play, and the Pittsburgh Steelers never go away quietly. I still expect the Ravens to be a postseason team, but I like the Bengals more than them to win the division, and I have no reasonable expectations for this team to make it to the Super Bowl.

AFC South: Houston Texans
Listen, I’m a big believer in the Houston Texans and what CJ Stroud can accomplish in this league, but it almost feels like all the understandable hype around the Texans has many just ignoring the other teams in the AFC South. This is a better division than most realize! The Jacksonville Jaguars are very good and have a potentially elite offense, the Indianapolis Colts overachieved last season with Anthony Richardson only playing four games, and the Tennessee Titans spent a lot of money this offseason with the expectation that they’ll be good this season. Houston’s season is a failure if they don’t win the division, but their competition for that crown is much more formidable than people realize.
