Jason Day’s Bold New Strategy: Staying in an RV for the Memorial Tournament

Jason Day is back at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, ready to compete in the Memorial Tournament. This year, the Australian golfer has adopted an unconventional approach to his tournament preparations, one that involves an RV rather than his own home.

Day, who resides in Columbus, typically enjoys the convenience of staying at home during the Memorial Tournament, given that it’s just a short 30-minute drive from Muirfield. However, after struggling in past editions of the event, his wife suggested a different strategy for 2024.

Reflecting on his lackluster performances, Day explained that his wife proposed he stay in a recreational vehicle (RV), a method he uses for other tournaments. “My wife suggested it," Day shared in an interview with SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio. “In the past, I’ve had some poor results here and she’s said, ‘I think you’re too relaxed and you’re out of structure. You need to treat it as a tournament week.’ So we have a spot where we park our bus in the driveway and, yeah, I’m staying there."

Jason Day has a long history at the Memorial Tournament, having participated in 14 editions. Despite making the cut nine times, he has only secured one Top 10 finish (T4 in 2020). His latest attempt in 2023 saw him miss the cut entirely. Determined to change his fortunes, Day began the first round of the 2024 Memorial Tournament with a promising start. He birdied the 1st hole, parred the 2nd and 3rd, and made a bogey on the 4th. After parring the 5th, he birdied the 6th and 7th, indicating a solid round in the making.

However, the course’s challenges soon emerged. Day bogeyed the 8th, double-bogeyed the 9th, and bogeyed the 10th. He managed to birdie the 11th, bringing his score to 1 over through 12 holes. Muirfield Village has historically been a tough course for Day. Out of 46 rounds played there, he’s only recorded ten rounds in the 60s, with his best being a 66. His best 72-hole score stands at 9-under par.

As the first round concludes, Adam Hadwin leads the field at 6-under, having carded eight birdies and two bogeys. Close on his heels, Scottie Scheffler sits in second place, just one stroke behind.
