Johnathan Rodriguez made his mark in a big way on Wednesday, singling home David Fry in the seventh inning for his first major league hit, driving in the go-ahead run for the Cleveland Guardians in a 6-3 victory over the New York Mets.
Rodriguez, playing in just his second game since being recalled from Triple-A Columbus, delivered a crucial grounder through the right side off Reed Garrett (5-1) to break a 3-3 tie.
The AL Central-leading Guardians, who entered the sixth inning trailing 3-0, surged ahead to tie for the second-best record in the majors at 33-17. Cleveland extended its winning streak to a season-high six games and completed their first franchise sweep of the Mets.
José Ramírez and Kyle Manzardo added insurance runs with RBI doubles in the eighth inning against Adam Ottavino. Andrés Giménez sparked the comeback with a three-run homer in the sixth off Mets starter Jose Quintana. The Mets had built a three-run lead with homers from Pete Alonso in the first inning, Jeff McNeil in the second, and Harrison Bader in the fourth—all off right-hander Triston McKenzie, who lasted five innings in his sixth consecutive winless start. New York fell to a season-low seven games below .500 at 21-28.
Quintana, who allowed just two baserunners through the first five innings, exited after the sixth. The left-hander struck out four without issuing a walk in his first outing against Cleveland since 2017.
A brief downpour interrupted the game in the middle of the seventh inning, but it cleared up quickly, allowing play to resume under sunny skies.
Looking ahead, the Mets will send RHP Christian Scott (0-2, 4.32 ERA) to the mound against San Francisco in the opener of a three-game home series on Friday. Scott made his major league debut on May 4 against Tampa Bay and has averaged 5.56 innings over three starts.
For the Guardians, LHP Logan Allen (5-2, 4.91 ERA) will start the first game of a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels on Friday. Allen has been stellar recently, pitching 12 scoreless innings in his last two starts, with victories over the White Sox on May 12 and the Twins on May 18.
