Post MLB Trade Deadline World Series Odds Movers: Stock Up/Down

The MLB Trade Deadline came and went, with a bevy of action. Which teams saw their World Series odds move the most following the July 30, 2024 deadline? We take a look at the World Series betting, specifically the post-MLB Trade Deadline odds movers:

San Diego Padres: Stock Up

World Series Odds Pre-Deadline: +4000 | Post-Deadline: +3000

Never content to rest on his laurels, A.J. Preller added to the San Diego Padres coffers ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline. In doing so, the Padres World Series odds ticked up from +4000 after the All-Star Break to +3000 heading into August.

San Diego solidified its bullpen, adding closer Tanner Scott in a deal with the Miami Marlins. That’s in addition to the previous deal to acquire stalwart Jason Adam from the Tampa Bay Rays. Finally, Martin Perez was added at the last minute, with Enyel De Los Santos heading to the Big Apple to accommodate the haul of big leaguers.

The Padres are marching, and Preller’s moves only reinforce their position. These odds could continue to tumble as the season progresses.

Los Angeles Dodgers: Stock Up

World Series Odds Pre-Deadline: +333 | Post-Deadline: +300

Already the odds-on favorite to claim this year’s World Series, the Los Angeles Dodgers saw their odds improve marginally following a handful of deadline deals. LA added reinforcements to its roster, forcing sportsbooks to move their championship odds up to +300.

The Dodgers didn’t need to reinvent themselves at the deadline. Already loaded with the top trio in the majors, LA must reinforce its supporting cast to enhance its championship aspirations. They did that, poaching Amed Rosario, Kevin Kiermaier, and Jack Flaherty from a trio of their American League counterparts.

The rich got richer at Chavez Ravine, but unless the Dodgers do something in the playoffs, retrospect will offer a different perspective.

New York Yankees: Stock Up

World Series Odds Pre-Deadline: +600 | Post-Deadline: +550

The New York Yankees were another squad that saw its odds improve marginally following, albeit with a quality, not quantity approach ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline.

The Yankees’ most notable acquisition was Jazz Chisholm Jr., a move made well ahead of the July 30 deadline. But they didn’t stand pat on deadline day either, adding Mark Leiter Jr. to their bullpen. In doing so, they saw a slight decrease in their World Series odds, going from +600 to +550.

New York has its playoff demons to exorcise, but Chisholm Jr. affords them the flexibility and offensive prowess to get over the hump.

Baltimore Orioles: Stock Up

World Series Odds Pre-Deadline: +700 | Post-Deadline: +650

Dealing from a position of strength, there wasn’t much the Baltimore Orioles needed to do to enhance their World Series odds. Nevertheless, the AL East leaders made two prominent moves ahead of the deadline, shifting from +700 to +650 on the futures board.

Previously stuck in a beleaguered Chicago White Sox lineup, Eloy Jimenez should see a vast improvement in his stats by joining a potent O’s lineup. Likewise, southpaw Trevor Rogers could finally reach his potential, pitching in a supporting role out of Baltimore’s bullpen. The acquisition of Austin Slater and Livan Soto from the Cincinnati Reds complemented those moves

The Orioles accomplished a handful of odds-improving moves without denting their farm system. That puts them in a position to compete for championships for years.

Tampa Bay Rays: Stock Down

World Series Odds Pre-Deadline: +15000 | Post-Deadline: +25000

To most, the Tampa Bay Rays flurry of trades at the MLB Trade Deadline was seen as a sell-off. Within the organization, though, they’ve expressed confidence in remaining in the playoff hunt. Unfortunately for the Rays, the betting market has deferred to the former.

Three games back of the final wild-card berth, the Rays moved on from several noteworthy starters. Gone are former Rookie of the Year Randy Arozarena, All-Star Isaac Paredes, and staff ace Zach Eflin, replaced by Christopher Morel, Dylan Carlson, and the return of Jeffrey Springs.

Tampa Bay’s odds fell from +15000 after the All-Star Break to +25000

We’ll see if the Rays can extend their playoff streak to six straight seasons, but the betting market has already made its stand.
