St. Louis Cardinals Triumph Over Orioles as Siani Hits First Career Home Run

Michael Siani launched his first career home run and drove in four runs, propelling the St. Louis Cardinals to a 6-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night.

Siani’s three-run homer into the right field bullpen capped a four-run fourth inning, giving the Cardinals a commanding 5-0 lead. This milestone home run came in Siani’s 91st career plate appearance. Siani, who spent parts of the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the Cincinnati Reds, was claimed off waivers by the Cardinals last September.

“Just staying confident in myself, taking it one at-bat at a time, keeping it simple, you know, trusting my approach especially with runners in scoring position,” Siani said. “Tonight, getting those two hits is great and builds confidence, helping the team out.”

Siani’s home run came two pitches after taking a close 0-2 pitch that the Orioles thought was strike three, but home plate umpire Laz Diaz called it a ball. On the next pitch, Siani crushed a Dean Kremer fastball for the three-run shot.

Sonny Gray delivered a strong performance, giving up three runs (just one earned) over 5 2/3 innings, as the Cardinals secured their sixth win in their last eight games. Gray (6-2) allowed three hits, walked two, and struck out six. He carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning until Gunnar Henderson’s three-run homer cut the Cardinals’ lead to 5-3. Henderson’s 417-foot blast to the left-center field bleachers scored Cedric Mullins and Jorge Mateo, both of whom had reached on consecutive fielding errors by Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn. Henderson’s home run was his major league-leading 16th of the season and his fourth in as many games.

“Siani’s taking really good at-bats,” Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said. “A big homer today, and the clubhouse is feeling pretty good about that now. He plays the game the right way and defensively, he’s elite.”

The Cardinals’ offense, anchored by Siani’s breakout performance, continues to gain momentum as they look to maintain their winning ways. With Siani’s emergence and Gray’s solid outing, St. Louis is building confidence heading into the heart of the season.
