Brooklyn Nets
The Brooklyn Nets aren’t in a position to compete in the East next year, but if Donovan Mitchell wants to go to New York and the Knicks aren’t a fit, Mitchell could view the Nets as a chance for him to have his own team in the country’s biggest city. While it may take a few seasons for Brooklyn to become an East contender, Mitchell’s presence would make the Nets a destination for other stars and allow Mitchell to settle into an environment that he’s comfortable in. A deal may require a third team to get involved to get Cleveland the necessary assets in return, but stars dictate where they want to go in this league. If Mitchell says he wants to go home and become a Brooklyn Net, chances are more likely that he’ll become a Brooklyn Net.
Miami Heat
The Miami Heat have been vocal about their star-hunting, and Donovan Mitchell may be the best young star to hit the market this summer. Stars want to go to South Beach, and South Beach wants stars, so once Mitchell asks out this summer, which appears increasingly likely, the Heat will undoubtedly become a prominent suitor. Alongside Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler, this squad would immediately be a top-four team in the East next season.
Houston Rockets
The Houston Rockets are looking for another piece to continue to accelerate their rebuild, and it’s hard to imagine that the Cavaliers would be able to find another team out there with as many available stars available for trade. The Houston Rockets could likely headline a package with Jalen Green and the No. 3 overall pick, alongside guys like Cam Whitmore and Amen Thompson, to tempt the Cavaliers to pull the trigger on a deal. Still, Houston has a few more years before they should become genuine contenders in the West, but Donovan Mitchell's presence would make that leap much easier.
New York Knicks
Donovan Mitchell has been linked to the New York Knicks since he burst onto the scene with the Utah Jazz. Mitchell is from the New York City area and has been very vocal about his love for the city and region, so his desire to play in Madison Square Garden seems to be a given. The Knicks are in the best shape they have been in Mitchell’s entire lifetime, and they clearly want to add a superstar-caliber player alongside Jalen Brunson. While the Brunson-Mitchell backcourt pairing may not be the best basketball fit, the Knicks would make the deal if possible and hope things work out on the floor. That’s the mindset you need to have when star-hunting these days.
Oklahoma City Thunder
The Oklahoma City Thunder aren’t necessarily in the rumor mills when it comes to acquiring superstar-caliber talent, given that they are in a small market. However, Sam Presti has been sneaky aggressive in the past, such as when he acquired Paul George from the Indiana Pacers. Now, he has a roster worth investing even more into. The Thunder have a hole alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the back part and enough draft capital to throw at the Cleveland Cavaliers to say no. The rumors are that Donovan Mitchell wants to get out of Cleveland due to the small market, so it’s fair to say he may be skeptical of a move to Oklahoma City. Still, on the court, the belief that the Oklahoma City Thunder could become a dynasty may win out.
