5 Coaching Candidates for Texas A&M Aggies Basketball

5. Luke Murray - Connecticut Huskies (assistant)
Luke Murray is currently an assistant coach at Connecticut and will be a head coach sooner rather than later. Maryland reportedly showed some interest in the offensive whiz before hiring Buzz Williams. Murray plays a pivotal role as a recruiter and is known as one of the brightest offensive minds in the country. Murray has no head coaching experience, so he’d be a risk, but there is a high ceiling, and Texas A&M has the resources that would be appealing if he decides to make the leap to head coaching.

1. Chris Beard - Ole Miss Rebels
Chris Beard is looking for a job that is a step-up from Ole Miss in the basketball world. It's no secret that he does not want to be in Oxford long-term. Texas A&M is now open after Buzz Williams hit the eject button a few years into his tenure (again) and bolted for Maryland. Beard would surely be open to a return to the state of Texas, and the Texas A&M job would provide him with a lot of resources and an opportunity to coach in the same state as previous stops like Texas Tech and Texas. Of course, any discussion on Beard hinges around how the Aggies administration feels about his past transgressions and the allegations surrounding him. If they are comfortable with his baggage, Beard will get the job.
2. Brad Underwood - Illinois Fighting Illini
Things get interesting if Texas A&M passes on Chris Beard. Brad Underwood graduated from Kansas State and previously coached at Stephen F. Austin. There have also been rumblings that he is not content at Illinois. Underwood is 61 and could be looking for a final challenge before retiring, and Texas A&M could provide the resources to pay his large buyout and fund a very competitive roster.
3. Fred Hoiberg - Nebraska Cornhuskers
Fred Hoiberg's resume does not stand out, but if the Aggies strike out on their first few choices, athletic director Trev Alberts might turn to a familiar face. Alberts was Hoiberg’s boss at Nebraska, and the two reportedly had a good relationship. He has not been particularly successful with the Huskers, but Nebraska plays a visually appealing style, which could be a breath of fresh air after the bully ball of Buzz Williams.
4. Alan Huss - High Point Panthers
There is a chance this late in the cycle that Texas A&M cannot pull a sitting head coach from a high-major program. In that case, the best lower-school head coach on the market might be Alan Huss. Huss is currently with the High Point Panthers. His teams play uptempo and a modern style, and he has experience coaching in the prep school scene that could prove fruitful in recruiting higher-level players than he currently has access to. Huss is a former assistant at Creighton and would potentially be in line to take over for Greg McDermott when he steps down, but Texas A&M should be able to land him if they want to.
