And let's jump into that battle in Norman. For much of the week leading up to that matchup, Oklahoma was in fact a 1.5 point home underdog. By the time they kicked off Saturday night in Norman, the Sooners were a 1.5 point home favorite. They took care of business in the first quarter. They were hitting on all cylinders, built a 17 to 0 1st half lead, but Alabama weathered the storm. They got a Ty Simpson touchdown pass. The defense forced a stop. They made a special teams play, and all of a sudden, they get a pick 6 right before the half to tie that matchup up at 17, they had all the momentum and pull away in the second half to win it decisively, 34 to 24. As I told you throughout the week, Caitlin Deboer was on the hot seat, but based off that performance, he got off in a big way Friday night in Norman. Yeah, I think he just slid that hot seat over to Norman, Oklahoma for Bells is what he did because that's gonna be a very hard loss for them to live with throughout the offseason because of the way in which they lost. Uh, they were a 17-point favorite. They came out ready to play, but you know, the question is, how do you handle adversity? Alabama got behind 17 points and they handled adversity. They came and attacked and scored a touchdown and got it moving. And then when they came back and scored and tied it up, Oklahoma panicked and they hit adversity and they did everything wrong. But there's a situation where you just did, if you could name this, the Cardinals sins in football, turned the ball over twice, won a pick 6 on a missedread by the quarterback. Uh, if you, uh, two kicking, kicking team breakdowns by all-conference punter and all-conference kicker who missed. Two field goals, uh, and then a 4th and 2 short yardage play which Oklahoma made a great call and Oklahoma, I mean, I mean, Alabama and Oklahoma could not stop. And then from that point forward, it just shows an implosion by Oklahoma. Alabama showed what they, what a team is supposed to do in a championship round, and credit has to be to them, but Oklahoma will have a hard time living with that game throughout the offseason. It will, and from a front seven perspective, it wasn't the rush defense, right? They held Alabama in check to 28 rushing yards on the evening, 1.1 yards per rush, but it was the secondary that did get abused by Ty Simpson. They allowed 232 passing yards, 2 touchdowns, no interceptions, and people will say the pick six was really the turning point in that. Matchup, but, you know, a, a couple of plays before that, uh, up 17 to 7, Oklahoma was faced with a 3rd down. Matier looked like he could break contain, and run for the first down, which potentially would have put the Sooners up, maybe at that 0.20 to 7 or even more importantly, 24 to 7. And instead, he throws a dime to Xavier Robinson. Robinson caught it in stride, but he dropped it. It didn't lead to a 1st down and Oklahoma was forced to punt on the ensuing play. Alabama gets the block and that really changed the momentum for the Crimson Tide in the 1st half. Uh, well, yeah, well, passes are gonna be dropped, and again, that's a big drop, but the problem was an all-conference punter gets a perfect snap into his hands. You have to kick that one and punt it 100% of the time. You can't let that happen. You can't have a perfect snap dropped and muffed that went to a 3-point changeup. That's 3 free points. And then You throw the pick 6, which was a terrible read by the quarterback, that's 7 more points. That's 10 points, uh, that the, uh, that Alabama got strictly on mistakes. When I look at this game, I don't think you can look at offense or defense. It was the breakdowns that Oklahoma had, the huge breakdowns, uh, all conference. I mean, Luke Groza, award-winning field goal kicker, missed two field goals. So he, he always makes that 6 points. Add up the things they didn't do right, and that overtook that, that overcame every single thing because Alabama did not run the ball very well. Uh, the quarterbacks statistically weren't that much different, but the fact was Oklahoma made every key mistake that you can make to give a game away, and that's what they did.
