Reaches & Misses: 5 Teams That Might Regret NFL Draft Choices

Ricky Pearsall - San Francisco 49ers
It's not as though we're projecting Ricky Pearsall to be a poor receiver in the NFL, but rather more so that we felt there were better options on the board when the 49ers made their first-round selection. We've seen this song and dance repeatedly at the NFL Draft, where a team reaches for a receiver when other highly-touted ones are available. Will the 49ers go down as the next team to do that? The 49ers have a strong track record with receivers, but we're not sure about this.

Michael Penix Jr. - Atlanta Falcons
The shocker of Day 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft was undoubtedly the Atlanta Falcons selecting Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth overall pick. We're not going to say that Penix Jr. won't one day be the starting quarterback for the Falcons, but that day certainly isn't right now with Kirk Cousins signing as a free agent. The Falcons invested a lot of guaranteed money in Cousins, meaning he's their starting for the foreseeable future. With more pressing needs on their roster, the Falcons had a chance to surround Cousins with more talent and failed to do so. To say this was a head-scratcher would be an understatement.

Bo Nix - Denver Broncos
After putting together another dominant campaign in Oregon, it wasn't hard to envision Bo Nix as a first-round pick. The Denver Broncos had a clear need on their roster, and Nix can fill that hole immediately. Still, the price felt too high for Nix to be selected this early, and there were other core pieces available that could have benefited the Broncos more in the future. Nix can potentially be a fine starter in the NFL, but we're not sold on his ceiling. Can Sean Payton work his magic with a QB again?
Offensive Rookie of the Year Odds: +2100
J.J. McCarthy - Minnesota Vikings
There's a chance that J.J. McCarthy will become a solid starting quarterback in the NFL, but nothing has transpired to make us change our tune about him yet. McCarthy can manage a game and was a proven winner at Michigan, but the NFL is a different story, and it'll be interesting to see if he can process the game at this speed. McCarthy will have to take control of the Vikings offense more than he did at Michigan. The one thing he has going for him is a plethora of weapons to throw at on Day 1. Still, we're not sold on McCarthy as a top-ten pick.
Offensive Rookie of the Year Odds: +1000
Brian Thomas Jr. - Jacksonville Jaguars
The ceiling of Brian Thomas Jr. is high, and he should be able to step into this offense and make a difference from Day 1. Still, the Jaguars had more pressing needs to target, specifically in their secondary, and their early pick could have gone to better use. The Jaguars had plenty of options in the second round regarding wide receivers, while the options were limited with defensive backs. Sure, it was a deep class in both respects, but the Jaguars could have plugged a hole in their roster had they gone in a different direction on Day 1.
