AL ROY Odds: Yoshida Leads, Rangers’ Jung Closing Gap

The American League is stacked with young potential stars, and they’re already making their names known in the Rookie of the Year race. SportsGrid has your updated odds.

1. Masataka Yoshida +210 (Last week: +170)

If you’re looking for a difference maker that’s stepped into the Boston Red Sox lineup and hasn’t missed a beat, look no further than Masataka Yoshida. He’s older than most players in the mix at 29 but is still considered a rookie after coming over from Japan in 2023 and signing with the Red Sox.

Yoshida has continued to be a productive member of the Red Sox, but that doesn’t mean his position as the odds-on favorite is safe. Josh Jung is charging up the odds board, even with Yoshida owning a strong .847 OPS in 59 games. Yoshida is still the odds-on favorite, but he’s seen his odds of winning American League Rookie of the Year drop from +170 to +210.

2. Josh Jung +260 (Last week: +600)

The biggest power threat on this list is Texas Rangers’ third baseman, Josh Jung. He’s helped give the team more length in their batting order and has been a key contributor in helping them get off to this great start, where they sit on top of the AL West.

Jung has hit safely in four of his last five games, and he’s become the biggest riser on this list with the consistency he’s brought to the table. He boasts a strong .843 OPS, along with 13 home runs, leading to his odds getting bet down from +600 to +260. Jung has cut into Yoshida’s lead at the top, making this a real race in June.

3. Hunter Brown +600 (Last week: +600)

The Houston Astros have done a tremendous job producing quality starting pitching over the years. Hunter Brown has been no different in 2023, and he’s demonstrating powerful stuff for the club in their pursuit of winning back-to-back World Series.

The Astros right-hander has brought a lot of consistency to the table, but he’s somewhat tailed off in terms of high-quality starts over his last five. Brown has allowed at least three earned runs in three of his previous five appearances, which has led to him maintaining his +600 odds.

4. Gunnar Henderson +850 (Last week: Unranked in Top Five)

One of the top prospects in MLB made his debut in September last season, and you’re starting to see him emerge as a real threat to win AL Rookie of the Year. Baltimore Orioles infielder Gunnar Henderson is putting together an outstanding rookie campaign and has been very strong over the last month.

Henderson has been showing his ceiling in June, which has seen him hit home runs in three of his last five games with the Orioles. The infielder has a strong .804 OPS, nine home runs, and a solid 1.3 WAR. Henderson has yet to be ranked inside the top five over the last month, but he now finds himself with the fourth-shortest odds at +850.

5. Royce Lewis +2000 (Last week: Unranked in Top Five)

It feels like it’s been a long time that Minnesota Twins shortstop Royce Lewis has been riding on the hype train. We’ve been waiting for him to be called upon at the big league level, and he’s now done just that, making an impact with the big club.

Lewis has played in just ten games with the Twins in 2023, but the 24-year-old is finally here to stay. Lewis has hit .317, along with a .805 OPS, throughout those ten games. With his strong play for the Twins in limited sample size, Lewis is still considered a longshot at +2000, but he’s at least entered into the discussion now.
