Can Nick Singleton or Drew Allar Bring Penn a Heisman?

Penn State has a rich college football tradition that is usually highlighted by its dynamic defense and dominant rushing attack. Yet, Heisman conversations haven’t frequently revolved around the Nittany Lions. John Cappelletti is the only one from this prestigious program to have hoisted the coveted trophy back in 1973.
The history of Penn State and its Heisman contention is replete with talented players who made it close but not close enough. Names like Ki-Jana Carter, Curtis Enis, Larry Johnson, and Saquon Barkley are entrenched in this narrative, each finishing in the top three. Yet, they all fell short of the ultimate honor, never finishing higher than fifth.
This historical pattern, however, might be in for a change with the emergence of two promising talents, Nick Singleton and Drew Allar. Both players have brought a wave of renewed hope and hype to Penn State, the likes of which haven’t been seen since 1999.
Singleton, known for his big play potential, showcased his abilities last season, leading fans to speculate that he could be a strong contender for the Heisman. Although a long shot at +6500, managing his workload might be crucial to his potential success and chance at the award. However, his chances could be complicated by Penn State’s running back room’s depth, as he splits with Kaytron Allen.
The Heisman Trophy, unfortunately, has evolved into what some consider a “quarterback award," which shines a spotlight on Allar. As the team’s quarterback, he’s expected to face off against Michigan pivot JJ McCarthy. Allar also has the daunting task of leading Penn State to victory against a formidable opponent like Ohio State in Columbus. If he can deliver on this hype and steer the team to a breakout season, his +2500 odds for the Heisman should significantly increase.
This upcoming season has the potential to rewrite Penn State’s Heisman narrative. It’s been a long time since the days of John Cappelletti, and these two players, Singleton and Allar, could be the catalysts to end this drought. They may be able to claim that elusive Heisman Trophy, bringing it back to Happy Valley for the first time in over 50 years.
