4. Tyus Jones
The Washington Wizards will be active sellers during this trade market as they continue to push for a top-three draft pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. Tyus Jones will probably be traded, and the price won't be high. Jones is a good shooter and passer. His impact on defense will be negligible, but he's not bad. If nothing else, Jones would be an additional option for the Lakers, and they'd maintain a lot of flexibility to make other moves.
What Do the Lakers Need?
Currently sitting at 24-25 and in danger of missing the NBA Playoffs, the Los Angeles Lakers need a major shakeup. Despite relatively healthy campaigns for stars Anthony Davis and LeBron James, the team is still searching for answers, putting Rob Pelinka under pressure to improve the roster. The Lakers' most pressing needs are a shot-creating guard capable of providing perimeter defense, a quality wing defender, and a more capable backup big man than they have with Christian Wood. Who are the top targets to fill those holes?
1. Dejounte Murray
The current Atlanta Hawks guard would provide the Lakers with a boost of athleticism and shot creation on offense, plus length on the perimeter on defense. He was an all-defensive NBA guard in San Antonio but has regressed in that area in Atlanta. That could be a lack of focus or a symptom of being paired with Trae Young in the backcourt. He'd undoubtedly be an upgrade on what the Lakers currently have, but the Hawks are reportedly asking a very high price. The Lakers have labeled Austin Reaves "untouchable," but he has not played like someone untradeable. If Pelinka could move Reaves, plus a salary matching piece to get Murray, and avoid giving up draft capital, it'd be a risk worth taking.
3. Kelly Olynyk
To be clear, Blazers forward Jerami Grant is likely not a player the Lakers have enough ammo to land. Portland is asking a steep price for the veteran, and it's not 100% clear he would change the equation for the Lakers. Grant provides defensive versatility, and a lineup featuring James, Davis, and Grant would be challenging to score on in the playoffs. He's also a terrific creator off the dribble and a good shooter. Grant does not rebound well, and the price is likely two rotation players and multiple first-round picks. The Lakers cannot make that move unless they are convinced Grant makes them a legitimate title contender.
