Gavin Fien and Tate Southisene
Continuing with standout prep hitters, Gavin Fien (Great Oak HS, Calif.) and Tate Southisene (Basic HS, Nev.) lived up to the hype at the Combine.
Fien’s swing is compact and efficient, with minimal wasted movement, allowing for consistent contact and future power projection as he matures. A Texas commit, Fien may never reach campus, as many scouts believe he’s unlikely to slip past the early rounds of the draft.
This marked my second in-person look at Southisene this spring—the first coming at the Boras Classic, where he promptly launched a home run in the only at-bat I saw. If the name rings a bell, it's because his brother, Ty Southisene, went in the fourth round to the Cubs last year. Tate, however, may hear his name called even earlier. A right-handed hitter with explosive athleticism in the box, he generates elite exit velocities and shows advanced ability to drive the ball with authority to all fields.
