MLB at Rickwood Field: Everything You Need To Know
Rickwood Field holds the distinction of being the oldest professional baseball park in the USA. It opened in 1910, predating Fenway Park by two years and Wrigley Field by four years. When Comiskey Park was demolished in 1991, Rickwood Field officially became the oldest ballpark in the country.
Originally built for the Birmingham Barons of the Southern Association, Rickwood Field also served as the long-time home for the Birmingham Black Barons, who played in the Negro Leagues from the 1920s through the 1960s.
Last summer, Major League Baseball announced that the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals would play a regular season game at Rickwood Field in 2024. Nearly a year later, MLB at Rickwood Field is finally about to become a reality.
The History
To understand the significance of MLB at Rickwood Field, we must first revisit the story of MLB at the Field of Dreams.
In August 2021, the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees played the inaugural Field of Dreams game amidst the cornfields of Dyersville, Iowa. The following year, the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds participated in the second annual Field of Dreams matchup.
Due to construction at the site, the Field of Dreams game was not held in 2023, and it will not occur this summer either. The event has been postponed until at least 2025.
In its place, MLB chose to host a regular season game at another iconic location: Rickwood Field. Commissioner Rob Manfred announced that the event would "pay tribute to the Negro Leagues" and honor Willie Mays, who played for the Birmingham Black Barons at Rickwood Field before his legendary career with the New York Giants. Unfortunately, Mays passed away on Tuesday afternoon at the age of 93.
The Events
In celebration of Juneteenth, Rickwood Field will host Barnstorm Birmingham (stylized as BARNSTORM BIRMINGHAM) on Wednesday, June 19.
The event will feature a celebrity softball game with notable participants such as 2006 NL MVP Ryan Howard and Emmy-nominated comedian Roy Wood Jr., followed by a performance by Metro Boomin. The main event will take place on Thursday, June 20, when the Giants and Cardinals face off, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:15 pm local time (CDT) at Rickwood Field. For fans attending, public gates will open at 3:00 pm.

Who Is Playing in MLB at Rickwood Field?
The San Francisco Giants, with whom Willie Mays spent 21 years of his illustrious career, will take on the St. Louis Cardinals at Rickwood Field on June 20.
In tribute to the history of Black baseball in their respective cities, both teams will don special uniforms. The Giants will wear a modern version of the San Francisco Sea Lions' uniforms, while the Cardinals will sport redesigned uniforms of the St. Louis Stars.
Although the Giants have a strong connection to Willie Mays, the Cardinals will serve as the home team for this game. This decision is partly due to St. Louis being significantly closer to Birmingham than San Francisco. After the game at Rickwood Field, the two teams will head to St. Louis to continue their three-game series at Busch Stadium over the weekend.
Projected Starters
These arms are currently lined up to start on June 20 at Rickwood Field:
- Giants: Keaton Winn (RHP)
- Cardinals: Andre Pallante (RHP)
