Leg 1: Phillies ML
The Phillies are the best team in baseball, and we’re getting them at plus-money tonight. Yes, they are dealing with a massive case of the injury bug as Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and JT Realmuto are all currently on the IL, while Michael Mercado will make his first career start. Still, this team deserves our trust. We can’t be too quick to forget that the Cubs have been terrible of late, losing seven of their last ten. Even shorthanded, I trust the Phillies’ talent more, and I believe Mercado can hold it down enough on the mound for the Phils’ bats to jump on Hayden Wesneski, who had a 6.57 ERA in June.
Leg 2: Michael Mercado 4+ Strikeouts
Michael Mercado is making his first MLB start tonight and second overall appearance. Luckily, he has an optimal matchup against the below-average Cubs’ offense, which strikes out a ton. Across the past two weeks, the Cubs have struck out at the second-highest clip in baseball. We expect Mercado to be in the game long enough to rack up four strikeouts.
Leg 3: Trea Turner 2+ Total Bases
Trea Turner is the biggest name in the Phillies’ lineup right now, given all the injuries, so we need him to put together a dominant showing at the plate to propel the Phillies over the top on the road. Since returning from injury in mid-June, Turner has a .302 batting average and has had at least two total bases in seven of 12 games. We want better extra-base numbers from him, but we’ll count on how much the Phillies rely on him now.
Leg 4: Nick Castellanos 1+ Hit
Nick Castellanos has recorded a hit in 11 of his last 13 games, and he’s fresh off an epic four-hit performance on Sunday. Casty rides off momentum, so we’ll look for that showing to help get at least a single hit for us tonight.
Leg 5: Brandon Marsh 1+ Hit
Brandon Marsh has been batting in the cleanup spot for the Phils due to all their injuries. We’ll trust him tonight because he’ll face a right-handed pitcher, against whom he is batting .304 on the season.
Leg 6: Cody Bellinger 1+ Hit
We need to find a way to get a Cub into our SGP, so we’ll look to Cody Bellinger to get us a hit, as he’s accomplished that in 11 of his last 12 games. Sounds simple enough to me!
