MLB Trade Proposal: Mason Miller to the New York Yankees

The Rationale
Unlike the Orioles and Cubs, the Yankees have no doubts about their closer. Clay Holmes has been one of the best relievers since joining the team in 2021 and is off to another great start in 2024. New York’s bullpen leads MLB in saves and is second in ERA.
However, the Yankees are under immense pressure to win now. Juan Soto becomes a free agent at the end of the season, and Aaron Judge, now over 30, won't be a superstar forever. Additionally, chairman Hal Steinbrenner has stated that the team's current payroll is unsustainable. The Yankees of 2025 and beyond might not be as competitive as they are now.
Given these factors, it's easy to see why the Yankees would go all-in for Miller. Acquiring him wouldn’t just add one of the best closers in baseball to their roster—it would also prevent division rivals from getting him.
Although New York’s farm system isn't as strong as Baltimore’s or Chicago’s, the Yankees have the talent to assemble a competitive package for Miller and might be more driven than any other team to make it happen.

Trading Mason Miller
Mason Miller has been the standout player for the Oakland Athletics this season, showcasing his impressive pitching skills as a rookie. However, his success also underscores the overall weakness of the A's team. Given their poor performance in recent years, Oakland is expected to be active sellers at the trade deadline this summer.
The A's were the worst team in the American League in 2022 and 2023, and this season, they are only slightly better due to the struggles of the Chicago White Sox. Oakland lacks valuable trade assets, as their veteran players with expiring contracts haven't performed well. Instead, their best performers are on inexpensive, pre-arbitration deals.

New York Yankees Trade Package
- Yankees get: Mason Miller
- Athletics get: Spencer Jones (Yankees preseason No. 2 prospect); Everson Pereira (No. 5); Brock Selvidge (HM)
New York Yankees Prospects of Interest
Spencer Jones has had a slow start in 2024, but his potential is undeniable.
Despite the inherent risk, Jones has All-Star potential as a towering power threat with surprisingly good movement in center field and a knack for making solid contact. With a better approach and consistent elevation, Jones could become one of the most dynamic prospects in baseball. He's huge, incredibly strong, and boasts plus speed with a future in center field. Given his team's history, it's hard not to compare him to another imposing center fielder.
Parting with Jones will be tough for the Yankees, especially since their No. 1 prospect is another power-hitting center fielder already proving his worth in the MLB. However, the Yankees won't land Miller unless they’re willing to trade a talent like Jones.

More to the Package
Everson Pereira is another powerful outfielder with the potential to stay in center field, but he has more concerns than Jones. He struggled significantly in a few games with the big league club last year, and his performance at Triple-A this season has been underwhelming. To have any chance of succeeding against MLB pitching, he needs to reduce his strikeouts.
Lastly, Brock Selvidge, a 21-year-old left-hander, has performed well at every level in his young career. He’s the final piece the Yankees need to include in this deal. Selvidge's versatile pitch mix could help him develop into a reliable back-end starter at the MLB level.
