16) Virginia Tech at South Carolina - December 2
This matchup between two struggling programs could go one of two ways. The first option is that it could be an absolute snooze fest between two squads unwilling to assemble a winning recipe. OR, this matchup could be an exciting battle between two teams willing to claw their programs back into the conversation in their respective conferences. Virginia Tech's 13-19 record in 2024-25 doesn't tell the whole story, as the Hokies showed more flashes than what their record portrays. The same could be said about Lamont Paris and the Gamecocks, who were one play away from multiple wins, including big upsets during their disappointing season in Columbia, SC. Regardless of where things stand, this matchup comes in at No. 16.

1) Florida at Duke - December 2
Arguably, one of the best matchups of the college basketball regular season could come in this conference clash between the Florida Gators and Duke Blue Devils. Coming off a National Championship win, Florida retained multiple key players and retooled their roster throughout the transfer portal, landing multiple top transfers. As for Duke, Jon Scheyer's No. 1 high school recruiting class will have them in the mix for a championship rerun in 2025. That said, this heavyweight battle comes in at No. 1.
2) North Carolina at Kentucky - December 2
Looking back at past matchups between these two teams, they put together a must-watch game any time the North Carolina Tar Heels and Kentucky Wildcats go into battle. North Carolina hopes to bounce back after a fairly disappointing season for Hubert Davis in 2024, but with the talent on the roster to do that, UNC has high hopes for the 2025 season. Meanwhile, Mark Pope's first year at Kentucky resulted in a run to the Sweet 16. Building on that, Pope put together a monster transfer portal class, adding to an already impressive incoming recruiting class. Expect a dogfight in a matchup between two teams that have the firepower to make a deep run in March next season.
3) Louisville at Arkansas - December 3
Another team that bolstered their roster through the transfer portal is Louisville, which landed multiple of the top available players. The Cardinals' willingness to spend big on the NIL market proves their desire to put together a contending team heading into next season. They'll have their chance to prove they're the real deal against an Arkansas team led by John Calipari, who silenced the critics with a run to the Sweet 16 in March. The Razorbacks have their own aspirations heading into next season, and this battle against Louisville will almost certainly be circled on the team's schedule with a statement in mind.
4) NC State at Auburn - December 3
NC State's basketball program seemingly saw a complete rebuild this offseason with new head coach Will Wade overhauling the roster. Wade brought in multiple players from his previous gig at McNeese State, but perhaps his biggest get of the offseason was Texas Tech star Darrion Williams. The Wolfpack will have plenty of time to prove they're a real threat in the ACC, but they'll have their hands full against Bruce Pearl's squad in Auburn, which is a threat to make another run for the National Championship. The Tigers fell short this past season, and with redemption on their mind, expect them to take every matchup personally, especially against an ACC competitor.
5) Clemson at Alabama - December 3
The last time the Clemson Tigers took on the Alabama Crimson Tide, the two squads battled it out in a wire-to-wire game in the Elite Eight. Alabama advanced with an 89-82 victory, but the matchup was one of the best battles of the NCAA Tournament. The bad blood from the football field carries over to the basketball court between these two rival schools. With each squad looking to represent their conference with a win and proving they're a contender, this could be another showdown that all eyes should be on during this SEC/ACC challenge.
5) Missouri at Notre Dame - December 2
Missouri impressed last season, but much of the Tigers' core will be undergoing changes. Meanwhile, Notre Dame head coach Micah Shrewsberry has quietly built a very competitive roster that could allow the Fighting Irish to surprise a lot of people next season. Regardless, it's hard to rule out a Missouri team that continued to defy odds last season, which gives me confidence that this battle could be one of the more underrated games.
6) Tennessee at Syracuse - December 2
Syracuse went back to the drawing board this offseason and put together a roster they feel can get them over the hump. The Orange will be looking to redeem themselves from the 96-70 loss against Tennessee this past season. They'll have their hands full against Rick Barnes's squad who hope to get over the hump themselves when the postseason begins. To do that, they'll need to get things figured out in the regular season first.
8) Virginia at Texas - December 3
This matchup will be a massive test for each program and its first-year head coaches. Virginia has assembled a high-powered offense fueled by exceptional three-point shooters. Meanwhile, Texas has seemed to focus on building a defensive-minded squad with two-way players who can flourish on both ends of the court. In-game adjustments may be the difference-maker in this one.
9) SMU at Vanderbilt - December 3
This battle between two teams that have done an impressive job fortifying their rosters this season has the makings of a classic old-school battle. SMU has the luxury of three starters returning alongside multiple quality transfers. Then again, Vandy has done its fair share of talent acquisition through the portal, which could bode well for the Commodores to improve on last season,
10) Miami (FL) at Ole Miss - December 2
Miami enters next season without Jim Larrañaga as the program's head coach for the first time in 14 years. However, with former Duke assistant coach Jai Lucas running the show now, he's already proven he has what it takes to be the man for the job, assembling an excellent team ahead of next season. On the other hand, Ole Miss enters the 2025 season with increased confidence after a run to the Elite Eight in March. This matchup may be one of the most underrated battles in this challenge.
11) Mississippi State at Georgia Tech - December 3
Mississippi State and Georgia Tech are two programs often overlooked in their own conferences. However, both of these teams have shown plenty of grit, and their basketball cultures always seem to allow them to put together hard-playing, tough-nosed squads. This matchup could be the true definition of a dogfight between two squads looking to earn respect.
12) Oklahoma at Wake Forest - December 2
Oklahoma seems to be a basketball program back on the rise. The Sooners are quietly loading up on talent, and after joining the SEC, they're still looking to prove they can compete in this conference. On the flip side, Wake Forest has done a solid job of assembling talented players, which is why many view them as one of the biggest sleepers in the ACC. During this conference challenge, the overlooked matchups could be the battles that are the most fun to watch.
13) Georgia at Florida State - December 2
A battle between Georgia and Florida State would excite most people, especially on a football field. The talent level has increased significantly with both basketball programs taking steps towards contention over the last few seasons. Not only is each squad looking to knock off the opposing team, but they're also looking to prove that they're a threat in their respective conferences. This could be an interesting battle to watch unfold between two rosters whose strengths counter nicely against each other's weaknesses.
14) Texas A&M at Pittsburgh - December 2
Texas A&M's first-year head coach, Bucky McMillan, was forced to rebuild his roster with zero returning Aggies. However, the head coach took the bull by the horns and assembled a roster that could contend in not only the SEC but against ACC competition as well next season. Against a Pitt team that lost their lone bright spot from last season in Jaland Lowe in the transfer portal, the Panthers may not be the challenge for the Aggies on paper that they would have been last season.
15) LSU at Boston College - December 3
LSU put together an impressive offseason through the transfer portal, landing multiple top-100 players. Matt McMahon has high expectations entering his fourth season as the Tigers' head coach, and if he can't find a way to lead this team to a solid season, his seat may begin to get hot. Nonetheless, against a Boston College team that struggled severely last season, finishing 12-19, LSU should find success.
