Big Sky Tournament Best Bet: Weber State (+300)
Weber State is not only more capable on the defensive end than the league favorites, but they've also got an outright dude to rely on in crunchtime. Jones displayed his ability to take over a game most recently in an overtime win over Northern Colorado where he poured in 30 points and grabbed 23 rebounds with 23 points coming in the second half and overtime.
Big Sky League Overview
It's a relatively top-heavy race in the Big Sky this season, with loads of talent on the top rosters. There are superstars all over the place and three teams who will all enter Boise this weekend feeling like they've got a real chance at cutting down the nets on Wednesday night. Let's take a look at a few of the contenders and what they each bring to the table in what should be a really fun event, hopefully filled with Big Sky Bangers™.
Big Sky Tournament Favorite: Eastern Washington (+175)
When it comes to most Eastern Washington teams over the years, you're going to get two things: size and shooting. The Eagles measure in at 22nd nationally in average height while ranking fourth in effective field goal percentage. The ball movement is also a thing of beauty when you get to sit down and watch them in action with the sixth-highest assist rate in the sport. It's helped them offset a defense with plenty of issues, particularly when guarding the three-point line. They rank 337th in the nation in three-point percentage allowed, a rate that has been fairly constant over a the now hefty sample size of 31 regular season contests.
Big Sky Tournament Challenger: Montana (+270)
It really looked like it could be a special season in Missoula this year when freshman point guard Money Williams was averaging 14.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.5 assists through the first nine games of the season. His season was derailed by a broken bone in his foot in mid-December, forcing him to the sidelines indefinitely. He made his long-anticipated, albeit limited return to the court in Monday's win over Idaho State, where he had four points in five minutes. We're unsure how much playing time he will see in Boise, but we'd imagine he wasn't coming back for the regular-season finale just to mess around.
The largest concern for Montana is their lack of competitiveness from the Grizzlies against Eastern Washington. They were beaten by double-digits both times they faced the Eagles this season, allowing them to pull away from tight games in the second half.
Big Sky Tournament Dark Horse: Weber State (+300)
Dillon Jones is the next player among the surprising lineage of talent to make it to the NBA from Weber State. Damian Lillard and Joel Bolomboy have each made it to the league, while Jones is hoping to be next in line. He is a 6'6" pure athlete that can rebound and finish among the trees while also possessing a semblance of a threat from the perimeter. Jones has also developed into quite the passer, averaging 5.2 assists per game this season.
As a whole, this Wildcats team has been building towards this for two seasons now under Eric Duft. Nearly 70 percent of their minutes from last season returned with six of their eight players in the rotation coming from last year's roster. There's star power, continuity, and experience in Ogden that could be enough for them to cut down the nets in Boise.
