CBB Transfer Portal: Top 5 Landing Spots for Johnell Davis

5. Alabama Crimson Tide
Few teams play as attractive a style as Nate Oats’s Alabama Crimson Tide. Alabama is a very enticing proposition if a guard wants to run up and down the court and shoot three-pointers to their heart’s content. Oats is willing to rely on the transfer portal, and Alabama has the NIL power to land some quality players. Johnell Davis has no real connections to the South, outside of his time spent in Florida, but if he wanted to play in the SEC, Alabama would make a lot of sense.
1. Michigan Wolverines
Florida Atlantic star Johnell Davis is a coveted transfer in the portal, and his most likely destination is Ann Arbor. The Michigan Wolverines hired Dusty May, Davis’s head coach at FAU, and there is every indication that May’s star guard is his top target to bring with him to Michigan. Davis knows May’s system, and Ann Arbor is a relatively short drive from his hometown of Gary, Indiana. Michigan can be difficult for transfers to get into, but as long as there are no snafus with admissions, Davis to Michigan seems highly likely.
2. Illinois Fighting Illini
The Illinois Fighting Illini have much to replace heading into the 2024-2025 season. The headliner to depart is undoubtedly guard Terrence Shannon Jr. His absence leaves a gaping hole in the middle of Illinois’ offense. Head coach Brad Underwood can point to his open offensive system that allowed Shannon the freedom to fire away as an attractive option for scoring guards in the transfer portal. Johnell Davis is not as big as Shannon, but he could fill a similar role for the Illini if things with a transfer to Michigan go awry. Champaign is not far from Gary, and if Davis wanted to play in the Big Ten, Illinois and Michigan would be the best options.
3. Louisville Cardinals
After a miserable tenure, the Louisville Cardinals canned head coach Kenny Payne, and after going “big game hunting” for established Power Five head coaches, they hired Charleston’s Pat Kelsey. The Cardinals hope to pay some significant NIL funds to attract new talent and quickly flip the roster for a return to the NCAA Tournament. Kelsey’s Charleston teams played an attractive style, and he is expected to implement an uptempo offense for Louisville. It could be an attractive option if Kelsey can connect with Johnell Davis and convince him to be the fulcrum of his new roster.
4. Connecticut Huskies
The opportunity to put up big numbers might not necessarily be the same as it would be at Louisville, Michigan, or Illinois. Still, if Johnell Davis wants to win big, there would be no better destination than the back-to-back National Champions: the Connecticut Huskies. UConn will be losing guards Cam Spencer, Tristen Newton, and Stephon Castle, and no one will have a better recruiting pitch than the success Dan Hurley can pitch to recruits. Hurley was already tossing it out there in his post-game interview. He made it clear to anyone listening that if players come to UConn and follow his vision, they will win big and see their draft stock rise.
