College Basketball 2024-25 Preview Top 40: #37 Georgia Bulldogs

With the 2024-25 College Basketball season on the horizon, it’s time to break down our preseason top 40. Over the next several weeks, we’ll analyze rosters and critical storylines for each program. Our journey continues with Memphis.

Connelly’s Top 40: #38 Memphis | #39 Maryland | #40 McNeese State

Georgia Preview: Look Back

Georgia 2023-24 Season: Record: 20-17 (6-12 in SEC) |  Postseason: NIT Semifinals

The Bulldogs showed some promise throughout the postseason in the NIT. They knocked off some teams that picked up steam late in the season and narrowly missed the NCAA Tournament in Wake Forest and Ohio State while falling just short of the championship game in a semifinal defeat to Seton Hall. There has been a proven correlation between deep runs in the NIT and future success, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see it take place in Athens.

Georgia Preview: Departures

Georgia’s Biggest Losses:

Noah Thomasson (Graduation) – 13.1 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 3.6 APG
Jabri Abdur-Rahim (Providence) – 12.2 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 0.3 APG
Justin Hill (Wichita State) – 9.5 PPG, 1.7 RPG, 3.2 APG

Three regular starters exited stage left for Georgia in the offseason, most notably the graduation of Thomasson. His departure, along with the loss of Abdur-Rahim, leaves some serious questions about this team’s backcourt production, something they were able to tackle via the transfer portal. There wasn’t a massive alpha that left the program that must be replaced in 2024-25. With all due respect to this trio of players, they are replaceable pieces within Mike White’s system.

Georgia Preview: Arrivals

Georgia Top Additions:

Tyrin Lawrence (Vanderbilt) – 13.8 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 1.5 APG
Dakota Leffew (Mount St. Mary’s) – 17.6 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 3.9 APG
RJ Godfrey (Clemson) – 6.4 PPG, 3.1 RPG, 0.8 APG

Mike White must revitalize Georgia’s season basketball program in 2024-25. Following two consecutive 6-12 records in SEC play, another disappointing season could escalate whispers of dissatisfaction into demands for change, putting White on the hot seat. Fortunately, he has brought in a strong core of talent from the transfer portal. Vanderbilt’s Lawrence, a prolific 1,000-point scorer, is set to lead the offense and add significant scoring power. Similarly, Laffew, an All-MAAC player known for his scoring versatility and size, is expected to transition to the SEC seamlessly. Additionally, Godfrey offers valuable depth and will be a reliable rotational player.

Georgia Preview: Who’s Back

Georgia Top Returnees:

Silas Demary Jr. – 9.7 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 2.5 APG
Blue Cain – 7.4 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 0.8 APG
Dylan James – 4.0 PPG, 2.6 RPG, 0.5 APG

This is an up-and-coming group of returnees for Mike White to have back. Demary and Cain did well to live up to their top 65 recruit rankings out of high school and were solid contributors on a nightly basis. Demary settled into a versatile role within the team’s starting five and should flirt with a handful of triple-doubles next season. Cain brought some scoring punch off the bench and has the potential to be a breakout candidate within the SEC this year.

Georgia Preview: 2024-25 Season

We are slightly higher on the Bulldogs than the early national championship market may indicate. Still, this team has some potential with promising rising sophomores and a talented crop of transfers. While Mike White has only accumulated 12 SEC wins across his first two seasons, he is talented enough to lead this team to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2015. If you can find a plus-money price on Georgia to find its way into the Big Dance in 2025, we love the value of that wager.
