(9) Creighton Bluejays vs (8) Louisville Cardinals
Steven Ashworth 4+ Made Threes +125
The Creighton Bluejays and Louisville Cardinals kick things off on Thursday afternoon in what could be one of the most entertaining contests of the opening round. Ryan Kalkbrenner may be Creighton’s primary scorer, but we’ve set our sights on Steven Ashworth making four three-pointers versus Louisville.
Ashworth has cooled off over his recent stretch, but his underlying metrics indicate a scoring outburst. The senior has taken a high-volume approach over the past few games, attempting ten or more three-pointers in three of the past four. Still, he hasn’t sunk more than two shots in any of his last three. That drops his three-point shooting percentage to 33.3% across that four-game sample. That puts Ashworth below his season-long average of 36.9%, making him a natural progression candidate against the Cardinals.
Louisville has struggled to defend the three all season, but that’s been even more pronounced recently. The Cardinals are giving up a 37.7% three-point shooting over their last three, playing into Ashworth’s anticipated success.
At plus-money, it’s worth investing in Ashworth to go on a scoring surge in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. We’re setting the benchmark at four three-pointers, but we wouldn’t be surprised if he blew past it.

(11) VCU Rams vs (6) BYU Cougars
Egor Demin Over 3.5 Assists -165
The VCU Rams will test the BYU Cougars in their first-round matchup. Nevertheless, we expect the Cougars to continue their world-class scoring streak in Denver. Egor Demin is BYU’s catalyst on offense, and he will be ready to drop dimes versus the Rams.
Demin is always in a giving mood, but he’s been even more generous with the ball in the latter stages of the campaign. The Russian averages 5.4 assists per game on the season, but he’s bumped that up more recently. Demin has dished out five or more assists in five of his last nine, totaling 50 assists across that sample. Naturally, that increase in production correlates with more time on the court.
Demin’s expected to maintain his hefty workload as the Cougars try to go on a Cinderella run through the tournament. We could see him set the bar higher as the tournament progresses, with Thursday’s matchup against VCU serving as a stepping-off point. He should easily surpass 3.5 assists, but more reckless bettors could be tempted into a plus-money alternate number.
(15) Omaha Mavericks vs (2) St. John’s Red Storm
Marquel Sutton to Record 20+ Points +155
The Omaha Mavericks are in tough versus the St. John’s Red Storm on Thursday night. St. John’s is one of the most dominant defensive teams in the country, but that won’t stop Marquel Sutton from putting the Mavericks on his back.
Sutton has been Omaha’s top-scoring threat all year, but we’ve seen him take on a more prominent role as the season drags on. The senior has recorded 20 or more points in eight of his last nine and has averaged 23.3 over that stretch. Predictably, that correlates with increased production. Sutton is up to 15.4 field goal attempts per game while draining 53.2% of his shots.
Sutton is the Mavericks’ most dangerous weapon and will be given every opportunity to shine against the Johnnies. We’re taking the plus-money on an alternate number, backing the Mavericks’ forward to record 20 or more points.
