Top 5 Head Coaching Candidates for Wake Forest Football

5. Jeff Monken - Army Black Knights
If Jeff Monken wants to try himself at the Power Conference level (and he was rumored to be up for the North Carolina job), Wake Forest might be his only option. Wake Forest has to do something difficult for ACC opponents to prepare for, and playing a system like the triple option would make a ton of sense for a school with restrictions like Wake Forest. If Monken was interested, the Demon Deacons should give him a shot.

1. Bob Chesney - James Madison
Bob Chesney has been the head coach at James Madison for one season after leading Holy Cross from 2018 to 2023. JMU beat North Carolina 70-50 earlier this season and finished 8-4. Chesney has won everywhere, and his teams generally play exciting offensive football. He’d be the name Wake Forest would be the most excited about based on the early list of candidates.
2. Brad White - Kentucky Defensive Coordinator
A few defensive coordinators are being rumored as candidates for the Wake Forest administration. One of those is Kentucky defensive coordinator Brad White. White was a star linebacker for the Demon Deacons from 2001 to 2004 and then started his coaching career as a graduate assistant on staff in Winston-Salem. He has been the defensive coordinator under Mark Stoops for six seasons in Lexington and has had a couple of nice seasons with some other middling results. He has not been a head coach before, but the connections to Wake Forest make him a name to monitor.
3. Clayton White - South Carolina Defensive Coordinator
The second defensive coordinator on the list is current South Carolina DC Clayton White. In 2024, South Carolina had a top-20 defense and racked up the third most sacks in the country with a fierce defensive line. White has a ton of connections to the area; he was a linebacker and then a position coach at North Carolina State.

4. Jason Candle - Toledo Rockets
Toledo head coach Jason Candle gets connected to nearly every lower-end Power Four job that comes open. Candle has been the head coach at Toledo for nine seasons and has won at least seven games in seven of those nine campaigns. It would be an interesting fit as Toledo is widely regarded as the best-resourced program in the MAC, while Wake Forest would be at or near the bottom of resources out of all of the Power Conference schools.
