We'll take a look at the upcoming conference championship Saturday night. You're looking at it right now. Virginia holds a 3.5 point favorite in this matchup over Manny Diaz and Darien Mensah. In the series, coach, Virginia has won two straight, including last year. Early thoughts about this matchup and whether Duke can in fact strike the upset. Yeah, you know what? I just have to go about my life experience of playing the same team twice in the same year after you've won the first game. I don't like to play somebody a second time. In fact, I think the backup the team that lost the first game, uh, has a better chance of winning the second, and I think that's what it's gonna be with Duke. I look back in my career, it's funny, it When I went back into coaching after ABC Sports where I worked in commentating after Auburn, we played Carson Newman and beat him 31 to 14 when I was at North Alabama. Go to the playoffs, lost to them 24-21, and got knocked out of the playoffs. 1996, my dad beat number one ranked Florida State, uh 24-21 during the season. And in the national championship game lost 52 to 20 in the national championship game. When you play a team twice, if you're both good football teams, I'm putting my money on the team that lost the first game. I think that Duke's gonna upset them. They didn't play a great game the first time, but I think Duke and that quarterback are gonna win this second game against, uh, um, Virginia. Yeah, I think when you look at Duke in this matchup, you cannot allow Virginia to run the, the football the way they did in that matchup. Uh, in Durham, they pounded the rock for 224 yards on the ground, two rushing touchdowns and 5.3 yards per carry. Duke needs a much better effort. Now, it's on a neutral field. You lost the game at home where basically you were a 3.5, 4 point favorite. In that matchup and lost it by 17, but it wasn't even that close. They were down basically 31 to 3 in that matchup early in the third quarter. So what can they do differently? Do you think that they open it up and rely on M Mensah? If you're losing the battle in the trenches, you gotta obviously think outside the box and out game plan Tony Elliott, and this defensive staff. Yeah, you know, when I, when I talk about playing a team the 2nd time in the same season, it was a blowout and you're clearly a better team, I don't know that it makes a difference, but I do think these teams are much closer than that score indicated because really Virginia dominated all the way to the 4th quarter. But I think Menza is such an explosive quarterback. He can make plays. I think he could get hot and they play their best game. And I do think both teams will be a little tight. They've not been in the ACC. Championship for a while they've not been in this situation with a game that's so important and so I believe it'll be one of those it's probably an under, not an over in the way they play the football game, but I do think Menzo will show why they have the most productive offense or football team at Virginia, but he's clearly the best quarterback, and I think he can make things happen. I'm gonna go with my instincts and my history and say the team after their second game will come out and win this football game. Yeah, absolutely. And we talk about obviously the defensive front seven for Duke, the offensive line did not benefit the passing game with Dari and Mense in any capacity. They rushed 23 times in the matchup coach for only 42 yards, 1.8 yards per carry, which put Dari and Mensah into long predictable third down. And they could not convert and sustain drives, and that's the main reason why Virginia was able to win that ballgame. I know you've been high on Chandler Rodgers throughout the year. He transferred from North Texas and TCU. He's a mobile guy. Who do you give the quarterback advantage to, Mensa or or Morris entering this ballgame? Oh, I think Mina is clearly the best quarterback. He can make things happen. He's explosive. They can be the most explosive football team. I think Chandlers Morris runs their offense. If he plays clean and they don't turn the ball over or give up those explosive plays, they will win the game. They're favored and they will win the game. But I, I just know that a team that plays a team a second time. Uh, they'll come back and play better. They'll make the adjustments they have to make. And so just experience tells me you don't wanna play a team you beat. You don't have to play them again and I just think Duke's gonna win this game and put a whole chaos in this whole system, uh, is, is ACC not gonna have anybody in the final college football playoff or they're gonna have somebody like Miami be interesting.
