In celebration of International Women’s Day, we look closer at a significant recent pioneer moment in the NFL, as Jennifer King continues to smash through the glass ceiling. King keeps breaking barriers, making history as an influential figure in the sport.
King’s journey in pro football spans over a decade, starting in 2006 when she showcased her talent in the Women’s Football Alliance, a semi-pro full-contact league. She excelled as a quarterback and wide receiver for the Carolina Phoenix, demonstrating her skill and passion for the game. King spent 13 seasons in the league playing for Carolina, the New York Sharks, and DC Divas.
In 2018, King’s coaching career took a significant step forward when she interned with the Carolina Panthers as a receivers coach. Working under the guidance of Ron Rivera, she gained valuable experience and insights into coaching at the professional level.

Her collaboration with Rivera continued with the Washington Commanders, where her expertise and dedication earned her a promotion to assistant running back coach. This achievement made her the first black woman to hold a full-time coaching position in the NFL, underscoring her trailblazing role in the league.
The Chicago Bears named King as their new assistant running backs coach in February, marking her as the first female coach in the franchise’s 104-year history. This historic appointment is not only a win for King but also for women in the NFL, as it reflects the growing inclusivity and recognition of women’s contributions to the sport.
