Longshot: Carson Steele (+650)
Andy Reid likes to get creative with play packages in the red zone, often bringing guys deep on the depth chart to get into the endzone. Looking back on the Chiefs’ preseason, on the offensive side of the ball, rookie running back and fullback Carson Steele stood out as a weapon, making his way onto the final roster. As newly-signed Samaje Perine may not be up to speed yet, the door is open for Steele to find his way onto the field. At +650, Andy Reid is creative enough to draw up a play for Steele near the goal line.
Fade: Derrick Henry (-130)
I get all the Derrick Henry hype now that he’s finally landed with the Baltimore Ravens. Still, I can’t buy into him tonight in his first game, given the -130 price for him to find the endzone. Nothing I say can dispute that King Henry can easily find the endzone, and this is the most talent-rich offense he’s ever been in. However, I need to see it to believe it. We’re getting much better prices on guys like Lamar Jackson, Zay Flowers, and Mark Andrews to find the endzone, as all three are more proven in the Ravens’ offense. This could backfire as Henry could be a force tonight, and his value drops to around -160 next week, but it’s not a risk I’m willing to take tonight with all the other options.
Can't Go Wrong: Travis Kelce (+105)
Travis Kelce at plus-money, what could go wrong? Many want to believe that Kelce’s production might drop off in 2024, given his age and all the new weapons at the wide receiver position for Patrick Mahomes to work with, which may be true, but that doesn’t mean he won’t find the endzone in Week 1. At home, under the lights, in front of a rocking crowd, you know Kelce will make his presence known. It’s how the Kelce Brothers operate. In our last exposure to Kelce against the Ravens, he went for 116 yards off of eleven receptions with a touchdown, so we’ll gladly back him here at +105.
Zay Flowers (+210)
Zay Flowers recorded six touchdowns across the season's final seven games, including the postseason, establishing himself as Lamar Jackson’s top red zone target. He recorded a season-high 115 yards with a touchdown in the AFC Championship game against the Chiefs, and we’re getting him at +210 to find the endzone tonight. The value is there.
Rashee Rice (+155) or Xavier Worthy (+180)?
Rashee Rice became one of our favorite touchdown bets as the regular season unfolded last year, so I find it challenging not to find value in him tonight. A lot of hype surrounds rookie Xavier Worthy, but I don’t see enough red zone upside in him to back him at +180 compared to a much more proven commodity in Rice at +155. As much as we're excited about Worthy being paired with Mahomes, the price isn't right for his NFL debut.
Longshot: Nelson Agholor (+600)
While many are counting on Zay Flowers to make a massive leap, the Ravens’ didn’t do anything else to upgrade their receiving corps. Odell Beckham Jr. is now in Miami, leaving Rashod Bateman and Nelson Agholor as the other starting wide receivers alongside Flowers. I do not believe that Bateman will finally figure it out, while Agholor is a proven NFL commodity, no matter what you think his talent level is. Agholor caught five touchdowns last season, and he’s priced at +600 tonight to find the endzone as potentially the WR2. What is there not to like?
