Top WR Trade Candidates for Chiefs Amid Injury Woes
In Sunday’s win over the Los Angeles Chargers, the Kansas City Chiefs lost one of their most consistent playmakers on offense. After emerging star Rashee Rice went down following a tackle attempt from Patrick Mahomes on an interception return, it added to an existing issue. The Chiefs were already without running back Isiah Pacheco, offseason addition Marquise Brown, and now Rice, who is likely out for the season. Here are five pass catchers that Kansas City could look to trade for following the pile-up of injuries.
Amari Cooper, Cleveland Browns
Amari Cooper’s name came up quite often during the offseason during the Browns' reported pursuit of San Francisco 49ers star Brandon Aiyuk. The 30-year-old has spent three seasons in Cleveland after being dealt from the Dallas Cowboys in 2022. In each of his first two seasons, Cooper has managed to finish with 1,000+ yards. However, to start the season this year, the Alabama product is only up to 148 yards, averaging a career-low of 9.3 yards per carry. According to Spotrac, the Browns reportedly turned all but $1.21 million of the wideout's 2024 salary into a signing bonus, making him a desirable candidate. The Chiefs could look to bring a sure-fire veteran into the mix as they chase their third straight championship.
Robert Woods, Houston Texans
Robert Woods was once one of the most underrated receivers in the league during his tenure with the Los Angeles Rams. However, the veteran receiver has taken a step back following an ACL tear that ultimately ended his time in LA. Since then, Woods has bounced around the AFC South, where he currently sits as a depth piece to a stacked Texans receiver room. If Kansas City is looking for a cheaper option, the 32-year-old could be ideal.
DeAndre Hopkins, Tennessee Titans
DeAndre Hopkins has consistently been a top wideout since joining the league in 2013. The Clemson alum can be a game-changer when healthy, but he’s struggled with injuries over the last couple of seasons. Despite that, the Titans receiver is fresh off a 1,000-yard season last year, where he added seven touchdowns. With the Titans sitting at 0-3, the team could look toward the future and get draft capital back for Hopkins, who is on the backside of their career.
Tyler Lockett, Seattle Seahawks
Tyler Lockett may be the biggest dark horse of the group. The Seahawks speedster was drafted by Seattle in 2015 and has been a focal part of the team’s offense since. It would be interesting to see if the Seahawks would consider trading Lockett and moving forward with DK Metcalf and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. If made available, it seems like a no-brainer move for Kansas City.
Demarcus Robinson, Los Angeles Rams
Demarcus Robinson may not be a premiere option, but the wide receiver spent five seasons in Kansas City before joining the Baltimore Ravens and eventually the Rams. Robinson is familiar with Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes, which could serve the Chiefs well if they look for a smooth transition to any addition they make. The 30-year-old could be a name to watch.
