The 4 Nations Face-Off concludes with Thursday’s Championship Game between USA and Canada. So far, the tournament has been a resounding success, with no shortage of drama, intrigue, and storylines. That narrative continues with the grudge match that pits the two juggernaut nations against each other at TD Garden. The Americans outplayed their metrics in the round robin contest, besting the Canadians despite posting negative relative metrics across the board. Insulated by an insatiable home crowd, the USA will need to overcome several key injuries if they hope to claim the title in the NHL’s inaugural tournament.

Leg 1: USA 60-Minute Tie +340
When these teams met a few days ago, Canada put forth a more dominant effort. The Canadians out-chanced and out-shot their American counterparts, albeit with the USA leaving with the win. If Canada can replicate that effort in Boston, we could see this game heading to overtime before a winner is determined.
While Canada has been one of the best teams at creating chances, their ability to capitalize has left much to be desired. The Canadians have tallied 10 goals through the first three games, relying on special teams scoring to help them win. Most recently, the Finns were pressing late in Monday’s tilt before a Sidney Crosby empty-netter sealed the deal for the Canadians. Similarly, they needed a 3-on-3 goal in overtime to get past Sweden in the tournament opener. Ineffective scoring casts doubt on Canada’s ability to escape the final with the win in regulation.
Unfortunately, the States are dealing with a similar issue. After trouncing Finland 6-1 in their first game, the USA has scored just four goals over their past two. One of those was an empty-netter against Canada in the round robin, meaning Team USA has only three goals at five-on-five across their two more recent outings. That’s unlikely to change against a stout Canadian squad.
The drama everyone deserves is watching this game go to overtime or a shootout. Given both teams’ lackluster scoring, that seems like a plausible option. We’re taking a value approach with our first pick, betting that this one is tied at the end of regulation.
Leg 2: Nathan MacKinnon to Record 4+ Shots
Several surefire Hall of Famers have donned Canada’s red and white in this tournament. Sidney Crosby has turned back the clock with his performances, elevating the play of those around him. Included in that is Nathan MacKinnon, who has been one of Canada’s top marksmen in the 4 Nations Face-Off.
Across the tournament’s first three games, MacKinnon has totaled three goals on 10 shots. While he’s only exceeded three shots on one occasion, several factors should be considered ahead of Thursday’s finale. First, as the leading goal scorer, MacKinnon will be a priority in the offensive attack. Second, he only recorded three shots against Finland; however, Canada’s strategy changed drastically after they built themselves a 4-0 cushion. Finally, USA is dealing with injuries to Brady Tkachuk and Charlie McAvoy, which should afford the Canadians more time and space to launch their offensive. McAvoy won’t play, while Tkachuk is expected to suit up but is certainly not at 100%. Assuredly, MacKinnon will be one of the beneficiaries.
Canada’s attack depends heavily on MacKinnon’s contributions. In that regard, we expect him to be a driving force in the championship tilt. We’re including MacKinnon to record 4+ shots against the Americans.

Leg 3: Jake Guentzel Any Time Goal Scorer +320
With four lines capable of putting the puck in the net, the States have trotted out a balanced attack. But like Canada, USA has gotten more scoring out of their top lines. Jake Guentzel has been one of their top offensive performers, and we expect him to deliver another memorable effort at TD Garden.
Guentzel was held off the scoresheet against the Swedes but was a primary factor in scoring in the first two games of the tournament. He totaled four points against Finland and Canada, finding the back of the net three times across that modest sample. Although he wasn’t successful in maintaining that scoring streak against Sweden, he’s poised for a strong bounce-back effort on Thursday.
The American forward has been one of the most heavily skated forwards on Team USA. Guentzel led all forwards in ice time in Monday’s loss, skating for 23:36 and ranking second to Zach Werenski overall. Further, he’s recorded 10 shots throughout the 4 Nations Face-Off, emphasizing Guentzel’s shoot-first mentality.
Guentzel’s hefty workload is expected to continue into the final. Given his penchant for scoring, we like his chances of getting back in the goal column versus Canada.
