AL East Odds Update: Rays Surging, Yankees in Conversation

Zachary Cook

The Tampa Bay Rays have been red-hot through two months, boasting the best record in the big leagues.
We’ll dive into each team in the division with their odds of winning it from FanDuel Sportsbook.
Tampa Bay Rays -240
With one of the strongest starts to a regular season in recent memory, the Tampa Bay Rays are a sizeable favorite to win the AL East at -240. The Rays have been exceptional through two months, owning a 37-15 record while boasting the best run differential at +114. The Rays are the definition of consistency, but are they a 110-win team? It’s hard to say, and there’s nothing attractive about their current price.
New York Yankees +500
The New York Yankees had many problems to start the year, but they’ve gotten things back on track. The Bronx Bombers have climbed into the third in the AL East with a 30-22 record. The Yankees sit in a wild card spot but have a significant seven-game deficit to make up to catch the division-leading Rays. At +500, the Yankees might be worth a sprinkle to win the AL East, but it’s not something we’re bullish about.
Toronto Blue Jays +900
The Toronto Blue Jays have high-end talent, but an end-of-May slump has put them in a challenging position in the AL East. Toronto is in the division’s basement at 26-25, and even though this team could go on a run, it’s hard to come back from a 10.5-game deficit. The Blue Jays are listed at -146 to make the playoffs, and that’s a number we’re comfortable backing.
Baltimore Orioles +950
The oddsmakers’ disrespect of the Baltimore Orioles is real. Baltimore made a run at a playoff spot in 2022, and their young roster has grown in 2023, leading to a wild card position in the American League at 33-17. The O’s sit just three games behind the Rays for the best record in baseball but find themselves with the fourth-shortest odds to win the division at +950. It’s time to start buying what the Orioles are selling, even if you don’t expect them to keep up this pace.
Boston Red Sox +4000
Even though the Boston Red Sox sit above .500 at 26-24, oddsmakers aren’t considering them a threat to win the AL East. If we’re honest, it’s hard to blame them. When you look at this Red Sox team, they scream .500. Their +4000 odds to win the division might be slightly higher than expected, but advising bettors to invest at this number is challenging.
