UFC 315 Preview: José Aldo vs. Aiemann Zahabi
No. 11-ranked bantamweight Jose Aldo takes on No. 15 Aiemann Zahabi. Aldo is 1-2 over his last three, leaving it in the hands of the judges in six straight fights. Zahabi is riding a five-fight win streak and is the brother of famed Georges St. Pierre trainer Firas Zahabi.
Zahabi is one inch taller, but Aldo has a 1.5-inch reach advantage. Aldo has legendary leg kicks and knees but has become more strategic with his striking as he’s inched closer to becoming 40 years old. Zahabi lands 0.44 more significant strikes per minute but absorbs 0.34 more. Aldo has legendary takedown defense, and Zahabi only averages 0.16 takedowns per 15 minutes, so if the fight goes to the mat, it’ll be Aldo’s choice.
At -220, Aldo is a pretty significant favorite. Despite his age, he has also been able to stay competitive at the highest ranks, but every year north of 35 at the lower weights gets iffier. However, Zahabi is 37, so age will likely not be a factor.
💰 Best Bet: Aldo by decision -110
UFC 315 Preview: Valentina Shevchenko (c) vs. Manon Fiorot
The women’s flyweight title will be on the line when Valentina Shevchenko defends her belt against No. 2-ranked Manon Fiorot. Shevchenko is 1-1-1 over her last three fights, all against Alexa Grasso. Before that, she had a nine-fight win streak. Fiorot is riding a 12-fight win streak, going to decision in five straight.
Fiorot is two inches taller, but Shevchenko has a two-inch reach advantage. Neither fighter has one-punch power. Fiorot is the more active striker, landing 1.46 more significant strikes per minute. Shevchenko famously picks her shots but has been guilty of not being active enough. She’s been the more active grappler, averaging 1.43 more takedowns per 15 minutes. However, Shevchenko tends to expose her back when going for throws. She has underrated wrestling and could unexpectedly take this to the mat and win a stifling fight. Shevchenko is 37 years old, but only two years older than Fiorot. I think this fight is primed for an upset.
💰 Best Bet: Shevchenko by decision +210
UFC 315 Preview: Belal Muhammad (c) vs. Jack Della Maddalena
- Odds to Win: Muhammad -200 | Della Maddalena +154
- How Will Fight End: KO/TKO +210 | Submission +700 | Decision -180
- Will the fight go the distance? Yes -168 | No +132
Belal Muhammad defends his title for the first time when he takes the cage opposite No. 5-ranked Jack Della Maddalena. Muhammad is riding a six-fight win streak and is unbeaten across 11. Della Maddalena lost his first two MMA fights but has reeled off 17 straight wins since.
Both men are 5’11", but Della Maddalena has a one-inch reach advantage. The challenger will have the power edge, as the champion prefers to beat opponents with consistent volume. Twelve of Della Maddalena’s 17 wins have been by KO/TKO, but Muhammad has only been knocked out once. Muhammad is a technical striker, an excellent wrestler, and has an incredible pace. The champion might be specifically built for five-round fights. I think the belt stays where it is.
💰 Best Bet: Muhammad by decision +100
