Everything Must Go: Who Will the Miami Marlins Trade Next?

Relief Pitchers
This Marlins bullpen has been a shadow of its former self compared to last season's performance. Tanner Scott entered the season as one of the top relief pitchers in baseball. However, after a few setbacks during the spring, he has not been able to regain his 2023 form. As a result, he would no longer command the same return he might have fetched if the Marlins had moved him in the offseason.
That said, many contending teams are in dire need of reliable back-end bullpen arms, and a change of scenery might be just what Scott needs to return to his 2023 level of performance.

Selling Party in Miami
The signs of a new era appeared early this offseason when the Miami Marlins and former GM Kim Ng parted ways, despite the team’s first playoff appearance in a full season since 2003.
When owner Bruce Sherman brought in former Rays executive Peter Bendix as the new president of baseball operations, fans were apprehensive about welcoming an executive from an organization known for maximizing efficiency while minimizing costs.
As I highlighted in a preseason article, this transition was always going to take time.
Now, after the Marlins have parted ways with two-time batting champion Luis Arraez, the question becomes: who will be the next Marlin to leave Miami?

Jazz Chisholm Jr.
After Arraez’s departure, the remaining offensive piece in Miami with significant trade value is Jazz Chisholm Jr. Determining his trade value is challenging due to his inconsistent availability on the field. Although he has remained healthy this season, Jazz hasn’t played over 100 games in a season since 2021.
However, when he is on the field, his talent is undeniable. While his transition to center field started rocky, he has grown more comfortable in the position. His combination of speed, power, athleticism, and contract control through the 2027 season should make him an attractive trade asset for the Marlins.
So-called “character concerns” might be a factor for potential suitors. If Chisholm were to be traded, it would likely be to a team with a strong clubhouse and established veterans who can handle any potential issues.
Bryan De La Cruz
Bryan De La Cruz is arguably the next-best trade asset for the Marlins on the offensive side. Since being acquired from the Astros, De La Cruz has been a reliable contributor for Miami both offensively and defensively.
Other trade candidates include Josh Bell, Tim Anderson, and Jesús Sánchez. With Sánchez, the Marlins might find a trade partner who believes in his batting potential and is willing to take a chance on him.
Bell and Anderson, however, have not performed well enough this season to command substantial returns. If either of these veterans were to be moved, the likely return would be limited to organizational depth pieces.

Jesus Luzardo
It should come as no surprise that Jesús Luzardo is the most valuable trade asset currently on the Marlins roster. Since Miami acquired the hard-throwing left-hander, Luzardo has become a mainstay in the team’s rotation. Under the guidance of pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr., Luzardo has tapped into the high potential that has been evident since he was selected by the Washington Nationals in the third round of the 2016 draft.
Rumors of Luzardo being on the trade block date back to the Winter Meetings, with murmurs of a 1-for-1 swap with the Royals.
Now that Luzardo has returned from his IL stint without any reported issues after his first outing, the trade rumors could likely resurface. The demand for high-end starting pitching continues to grow across the league.
