Luis Gil’s electric performance on the mound, striking out nine batters, propelled the New York Yankees to a crucial 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night. This win marks Gil’s sixth consecutive triumph and continues an impressive streak by the Yankees’ starters.
Youngster Anthony Volpe extended his hitting streak to an impressive 21 games, tying the longest run in the majors this season. Volpe’s two-hit night also saw him crossing the plate, adding a critical run to the Yankees’ tally.
The Angels, who have been struggling lately, couldn’t muster up offense off Gil. The loss is the fourth in their last five games, underscoring their recent difficulties.
Despite the low score, the game was rich in drama from start to finish. Yankees manager Aaron Boone was ejected in the first inning following a controversial baserunner interference call on Juan Soto. The tension carried into the ninth inning, where the Angels posed a significant threat with runners on first and second and no outs.
Boone reflected on the game, saying, “It was a little weird to start, but also a really fun game to watch, albeit nerve-wracking.”
Gil (7-1) was dominant, allowing just one run on two hits over eight innings. His performance extended the Yankees’ starters’ MLB-record streak to 16 consecutive games of going at least five innings and allowing two runs or fewer. Since May 12, Yankees starters have compiled a remarkable 1.00 ERA, holding opposing teams to a meager .158 batting average.
Gil credited his success to precise pitch placement, saying through an interpreter, “The plan from the get-go was to be able to spot the fastball up, mixed with secondary pitches and to be able to command pitches in the strike zone. I think when we’re able to do that it allows you to have a good rhythm and go deep into the game.”
Clay Holmesnavigated the early trouble in the ninth to secure his 16th save of the season.
Looking ahead, the series finale promises an intriguing left-handed pitching matchup, with Carlos Rodón(6-2, 2.95 ERA) taking the mound for the Yankees against the Angels’ Patrick Sandoval (2-7, 5.60 ERA).
