2025 MLB Column: Are the Milwaukee Brewers Still Contenders?
Can the Brewers Keep Defying Expectations?
Every year, we seem to question whether the Brewers have enough to contend, and every year, they find a way to stay competitive. But this time, there are legitimate concerns. No more Corbin Burnes (Arizona Diamondbacks). No more Brandon Woodruff (injury). No more Devin Williams (New York Yankees). This is a very different Brewers team, yet they always seem to find a way.
The offense has a star-in-the-making in Jackson Chourio, one of the most highly touted prospects in baseball. Christian Yelich had a solid 2024 but remains a durability question mark. William Contreras is one of the best offensive catchers in baseball, but the lineup gets shaky after that. Garrett Mitchell, Rhys Hoskins, Bryce Turang, Oliver Dunn, Joey Ortiz, and Sal Frelick round out a lineup that lacks depth and consistency. If any of the top three hitters go down, this lineup could struggle mightily.
Betting Market: Will the Brewers’ Offense Be Good Enough?
Buy or Sell: The Brewers Will Finish in the Top 15 in Runs Scored?
-
Sell: Chourio is unproven, Yelich’s health is unreliable, and the bottom half of the order is weak.
-
Buy: If Chourio is a star immediately and Hoskins provides power, they could just sneak into the top half of MLB offenses.
Pitching: Can Milwaukee’s Rotation Hold Up?
The days of rolling out Burnes, Woodruff, and Peralta are gone, but Freddy Peralta is still here to lead a surprisingly solid rotation. Tobias Myers has breakout potential, and Nestor Cortes was brought in to add stability. Aaron Civale and Aaron Ashby round out the staff.
The rotation is underrated, but there’s no true ace. Peralta is excellent but not quite on the level of Burnes. Cortes has durability concerns, and Myers is unproven.
Betting Market: How Will Milwaukee’s Rotation Rank?
Buy or Sell: The Brewers Will Have a Top 10 Rotation?
-
Buy: Peralta is solid, and if Cortes stays healthy, this staff can compete.
-
Sell: No true ace, and durability is a concern across the board.
The Big Question: Is This the Year the Brewers Hit a Wall?
Milwaukee has mirrored the Tampa Bay Rays model of staying competitive despite budget constraints, but the Rays finally fell off last year. Is this the season the Brewers follow suit?
Buy or Sell: The Brewers Will Miss the Playoffs?
-
Buy: The Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, and Pittsburgh Pirates have all improved. This could be the year Milwaukee finally slips.
-
Sell: The division is still weak, and the Brewers always seem to find a way.
Final Betting Takeaways
-
Milwaukee’s offense is top-heavy, with questions at the bottom of the order.
-
Peralta is a great starter, but they lack a true ace.
-
The Brewers are always in the mix, but 2025 could finally be the year they regress.
The Brewers have defied expectations for years, but this version of the team may not have enough firepower to keep up.
