New York Yankees Dominate Mariners: Luis Gil Shines, Judge and Stanton Homer

Luis Gil was stellar on the mound, allowing just one hit over 6 1/3 innings as the New York Yankees shut out the Seattle Mariners 5-0 on Thursday, splitting their four-game series.

Gil (6-1) dominated early, retiring his first nine batters before surrendering an infield single in the fourth inning. The right-hander struck out eight and walked three, following up his record-setting 14-strikeout performance against the White Sox last Saturday, the most ever by a Yankees rookie.

Gil set down the next six batters after the single. He navigated some trouble in the sixth inning after issuing two walks. A visit from pitching coach Matt Blake settled him down, and Gil ended the inning by striking out Luke Raley with a 97 mph fastball.

In the seventh, Gil retired Mitch Garver on a fly ball to the warning track before being pulled. He exited to a warm ovation from the crowd, tipping his cap as he walked to the dugout. Gil has now won his last five starts and six consecutive decisions, allowing just two runs over 30 2/3 innings in his past five outings.

His performance extended a Yankees team record to 11 straight starts of at least five innings with no more than two runs allowed. Clay Holmes came on with the bases loaded in the eighth and secured the final four outs for his 14th save. It was Holmes’ first appearance since giving up four runs in the ninth inning of Monday’s series opener, a rare slip in a 5-4 loss.

Giancarlo Stanton got the Yankees on the board in the second inning with a towering 445-foot homer off the batter’s eye above Monument Park. It was his sixth home run in his last 14 games. Aaron Judge followed with a blast into the Yankees’ bullpen in the third inning for his 15th homer, extending his on-base streak to 20 games.

The Yankees are an impressive 36-4 when Judge and Stanton homer in the same game, including the postseason. Juan Soto added an RBI single in the seventh to pad the lead.

For the Mariners, RHP George Kirby (4-4, 3.99 ERA) will face LHP Mackenzie Gore (2-4, 3.30 ERA) in the opener of a three-game series against the Nationals on Friday. The Yankees will have LHP Carlos Rodón (5-2, 3.27 ERA) go up against RHP Yu Darvish (4-1, 2.08 ERA) in the opener of their three-game series at San Diego.
