Padres Pursuing Garrett Crochet, White Sox Fall to Chicago Cubs

The San Diego Padres are reportedly eyeing left-hander Garrett Crochet of the Chicago White Sox, according to Dennis Lin and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Although no deal appears to be imminent, the report highlights that the Padres have been the most proactive team in their pursuit of Crochet, a promising young pitcher.

Meanwhile, in an electrifying game at Wrigley Field, Ian Happ delivered a clutch performance to lead the Chicago Cubs to a thrilling 7-6 victory over their crosstown rivals, the White Sox. Happ’s second double of the night in the eighth inning drove in two crucial runs, propelling the Cubs to a dramatic comeback win.

Happ’s third hit of the game, a liner to the right-field corner, overturned a one-run deficit and sealed the White Sox’s 12th consecutive loss. The Cubs’ triumph marked just their third win in the last 12 games, showcasing their resilience in a hard-fought contest.

“It was a good ballgame with lots of back and forth,” said Cubs manager Craig Counsell, reflecting on his first Chicago Crosstown Classic. “We had some big hits and we needed some big hits. It was a fun night, scoring late-inning runs like that. Some homers, Ian’s double in the eighth obviously.”

The White Sox had moments of their own, with Luis Robert Jr. smashing a 448-foot solo homer to the left-center bleachers in the seventh inning, giving them a brief lead. Robert, returning from a nearly two-month hiatus due to a right hip flexor strain, also added a single, highlighting his impact on the lineup. Robert Jr’s. name has also been in recent trade talks.

White Sox starter Chris Flexen put in a solid performance, allowing just one run on three hits over five innings, striking out four and issuing no walks. However, the bullpen could not hold the lead, with Leasure (0-1) conceding two runs on two hits in the eighth.

On the mound for the Cubs, Shota Imanaga was charged with five runs—only one of which was earned—on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. The 30-year-old left-hander from Japan struck out six without issuing any walks, nudging his ERA up to 1.88.

Next up, the White Sox will send right-hander Erick Fedde (4-1, 3.12 ERA) to face the Cubs’ Jameson Taillon (3-2, 2.84 ERA) on Wednesday night in the continuation of this intense rivalry series.
