Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s Bat Incident Highlights Blue Jays’ Game Against Brewers

In a bizarre twist during the Blue Jays’ 3-1 loss to the Brewers on Monday, Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s bat became the unexpected highlight. In the fourth inning, Guerrero’s bat slipped from his hands and flew over the Blue Jays’ dugout, becoming ensnared in the netting above. Players below ducked and scrambled, but the bat didn’t fall.

Suspended roughly 20 feet above the dugout, the bat became an amusing subplot to the game. “I was really wondering what was going on there," Brewers starter Colin Rea remarked. “I think I threw a first-pitch strike and all of a sudden there’s this large cheer. I was like, ‘What’s going on?’ That was funny."

Initial attempts to dislodge the bat were rudimentary. Players nervously reached up and shook the netting, wary of the bat tumbling down on their heads. A few balls were tossed up in hopes of freeing it, but it was lodged too firmly.

The game continued with Guerrero’s bat still hanging above. Even when Christian Yelich hit a foul ball into the same netting, it didn’t budge. The bat remained suspended, like an odd good luck charm—though not quite bringing luck, as Milwaukee scored in the bottom half of the inning and Toronto struggled to find their offensive rhythm.

Determined to resolve the situation, the Blue Jays enlisted the help of their clubhouse operations manager, Mustafa “Moose” Hassan. Armed with an extended handle, Hassan made contact with the bat but couldn’t retrieve it. The handle was then modified with a loop to hook the bat. Chris Bassitt, known for his resourcefulness, took charge of the extraction.

After some effort, Bassitt managed to hook the bat. There was a brief moment of tension as the handle itself became entangled in the netting, but eventually, both the handle and bat were freed. Guerrero, who had watched the proceedings from the dugout, was finally reunited with his bat. He held it close and gave it a quick kiss, a gesture of relief and reunion after its two-inning suspension above the game.

Despite the comedic interlude, the Blue Jays couldn’t muster enough offense, leaving them to focus on rebounding in their next matchup.
