NBA Offseason: 4 NBA Coaches Who Should Be Fired Now

Frank Vogel, Phoenix Suns
Frank Vogel is a coach with a championship on his resume who certainly doesn’t deserve to be pushed aside. That said, it clearly isn’t going to work for him with the Phoenix Suns. When Vogel was hired, it was met with some pushback in the first place as it was believed that numerous players wanted then-assistant Kevin Young to earn the full-time gig. Young recently became the head coach at BYU, but it remains the same: Vogel’s tenure in Phoenix never fully caught on. Owner Mat Ishbia has stated his commitment to keeping this team together, but a new voice is needed if he wants different results.

Billy Donovan, Chicago Bulls
Billy Donovan is one of the most accomplished basketball coaches this century, but it’s not working in the Windy City. The Chicago Bulls organization is going nowhere with their current make-up, and there is nothing else Donovan can do to this roster unless they add talent that’s nowhere to be found. This is less about Donovan failing as a coach, but the Bulls need to tear down their entire roster and enter a full-blown rebuild if they want to be a contender in the next decade. Donovan would be immediately sought after by other teams when he hits the market, so it would be better for both sides to move on.

Chauncey Billups, Portland Trail Blazers
I don’t even know what the Portland Trail Blazers are doing. They’ve been bad for years, Damian Lillard is gone, and it’s hard to see any of their young players continuing to develop. Anfernee Simons is a nice player, but his ceiling seems maxed out. Shaedon Sharpe didn’t take the leap this past season as many hoped. Scoot Henderson was supposed to be the key to this rebuild but struggled mightily in his rookie campaign.
Chauncey Billups is a gifted basketball mind, but he’s 81-165 across three seasons in Portland. It seems like he’s gotten everything out of this roster he’s been able to extract, but for the Blazers to take another step, a new voice is needed. If Portland has another sub-30 win season next year, Billups should be out the door, so why not just rip off the bandaid now?
Quin Snyder, Atlanta Hawks
I was excited when the Atlanta Hawks brought Quin Snyder in to see what he could do with the Trae Young and Dejounte Murray duo, but again, like in Chicago, this team will not work. Snyder is a gifted basketball mind who has shown his ability to win many games as he did in Utah for many years. Still, it’s hard to imagine this Hawks’ roster flipping a switch and becoming a contender unless they add another star.
It’s very possible that Young may ask out this summer or the Hawks just opt to trade him, but once that domino falls, the rest of this team will collapse too. Whenever the Hawks get good again, Snyder won’t still be the coach, so like the Jazz did when they replaced him, the Hawks should eye a young coach to oversee the rebuild.
