5. USC Trojans
The USC Trojans averaged 41.8 points per game in 2023 and had star quarterback Caleb Williams propelling them to the postseason. Still, they floundered for much of the season and were largely considered a major disappointment. Williams is now in the NFL after being selected number one by the Chicago Bears, and USC is relying on Miller Moss to step up and carry the offense. The USC Trojans are rated with the 25th offense with a rating of 83. That seems reasonable, but they are ranked 19th overall and have an overall rating of 87. How does that make any sense? The USC defense is ranked 16th nationally, with an 86 rating. USC gave up 34.4 points per game in 2023, 121st in the country! They have a new defensive coordinator, but it would be a staggering improvement if they became a top-20 defense in 2024.
USC 2024 Win Total: 7.5
1. Colorado Buffaloes
The Colorado Buffaloes have a few stars in Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter, and they have again relied heavily on the transfer portal to revamp the roster around those key pieces. They might have an explosive and reliable offense, but EA Sports rated Colorado as the eighth-best offense in the country, scoring 89 (on a scale of 100). That seems lofty for a team that finished 60th nationally in scoring offense in 2023 and has not added much that would make 2024 markedly better. Still, you can squint and see a potent offense for the Buffaloes. The defensive ranking of 20th is inexplicable. Colorado was 127th nationally in 2023, and climbing more than 100 spots is next to impossible. Colorado will likely struggle to make a bowl game, and having them as the second-best team in the Big 12 is preposterous.
Colorado 2024 Win Total: 5.5
2. Texas A&M Aggies
Mike Elko has had a strong start off the field in his new role as the head coach for the Texas A&M Aggies. He has made good hires, particularly with offensive coordinator Collin Klein, and assembled an excellent recruiting staff. College Station has real momentum and a lot of excitement for the future. The Aggies checking in at No. 14 in the EA Sports College Football 25 rankings, ahead of teams like Ole Miss, is a significant surprise. The Aggies secured a rating of 88, tying them with teams like Penn State and Michigan. There is no reason to believe Texas A&M has the offensive firepower to end the season in the top ten. Perhaps the most surprising ranking of all was seeing Kyle Field ranked as the top home-field advantage in the country by EA Sports. Since joining the SEC, Texas A&M has had a winning record in the conference just three times, and the statistics are not present enough to suggest a massive boost in their play at home. Kyle Field is an impressive venue, and the Aggie crowd is faithful and passionate, but placing them at the top is unrealistic.
Texas A&M 2024 Win Total: 8.5
3. Wisconsin Badgers
The Wisconsin Badgers hope to improve in year two under head coach Luke Fickell. Having a second year in offensive coordinator Phil Longo’s system should help, and they are hopeful that quarterback transfer Tyler Van Dyke will provide a boost at that critical position. The Badgers have the 15th-rated defense nationally (86 overall), which is justifiable. Listing Camp Randall in the top ten for home-field advantages seems a bit high, and trusting Wisconsin’s offense to jump into the top end of college football is ambitious. Wisconsin has a win total of 6.5, and having them 18th makes the Badgers a bit overrated.
Wisconsin 2024 Win Total: 6.5
4. Clemson Tigers
The Clemson Tigers should have an elite defense, and they were ranked accordingly, earning the nation’s fifth-best defensive rating with a 90 on that side of the ball. That ties them with Oregon, Alabama, Notre Dame, and Michigan on defense. The defense could propel them to an ACC title and a bye in the College Football Playoff. The big surprise was seeing Clemson’s offense rated with an 87 and ranked tenth in the country. That would be a massive jump for the Tigers, a team that finished 52nd in scoring offense a season ago. Clemson does not use the transfer portal, so the jump would need to come from internal development and adding a pair of five-star incoming freshmen at wide receiver. Clemson should improve on offense, but if they leap into the top ten on offense, they will be a legitimate national title contender, which seems quite unlikely.
Clemson 2024 Win Total: 9.5
